🚨 🆘 If your child receives special education services in Montgomery County County, I want to make you aware of a drastic change for next school year. Special education positions are being CUT throughout the county.

Previously, staffing allocations were based on the number of HOURS that students needed services. However, now a student receiving 25 hours of service generates the same number of staff members as a student receiving five hours. The sped staff to student ratio is now 15:1.

Basically, what this means is, starting this fall, your child is not going to get the same level of service that they have been receiving.

Special education teachers, as well as classroom teachers, are very upset because this will affect so many children. There are only so many hours in the day and special education teachers are already stretched very thin to not only meet with students as well as complete hours of required documentation.

This change will also affect regular education students as the classroom teachers will be taking on more responsibility for meeting special education students needs. This will take time and attention away from regular education students. This will affect all MCPS students.

✅I strongly encourage you to reach out to superintendent, Dr. Taylor at [email protected] and let him know your concerns. I’ll put his email address in the first comment for easy copy paste after my post is approved.

✅There is also a special education parent survey that you can complete about your CURRENT satisfaction with your child’s special education services. I will also put that in the comments.

PDSP - Survey Tool Thank you for your interest in providing parent feedback to the State of Maryland Department of Education (MSDE) about services received by your child.

Copied from another MoCp website:

As you may know, on March 26th the Board of Education will vote on MCPS’s proposed changes to our schools’ programs - changes that will affect kids who are now in elementary and middle school, and for decades to come. While reforming MCPS is a good idea, this plan has very serious flaws - including the lack of a clear budget, no real analysis of which schools need which programs, and no plan for staffing - and it would likely deepen inequities in MCPS that the County Council recently identified.

I’m helping to gather signatures for a petition to force MCPS to make nine "Red Flag” changes to the program proposal before the Board’s vote. These common-sense fixes will still bring new access and opportunities to schools across the region - actually, they’ll ensure those opportunities are more equitably distributed - and will avoid the obvious problems with the proposal that MCPS leadership is ignoring.

Thank you for helping us ensure that EVERY child in MCPS benefits from program reform!

ESPANOL:
