We can't do this alone—and we don't have to.

Trusted community organizations across DC, Maryland, and Virginia help get diapers into families' hands, often alongside food, healthcare, housing support, and other services.

And that connection matters: 74% of families told us that receiving diapers through one of our partner organizations helped them learn about other assistance or services they didn't know about before.

Diapers meet an immediate basic need. They can also help connect families with even more support. Thank you to the community partners who help make this work possible every day.

This week, we've talked about a big number: 60 million diapers are missing from our region.

Behind that number are tens of thousands of babies across the DMV who need diapers to stay clean, dry, and healthy.

What does not having enough diapers have to do with child care, work, family finances, and children's health? Quite a lot.

When families don't have enough diapers, babies can experience painful rashes and urinary tract infections. Children may not be able to attend child care, and parents and caregivers may have to miss work or school.

One in five families Greater DC Diaper Bank serves reported missing work, child care, or day care because they did not have enough diapers.

Earlier this year, we hosted a webinar exploring why families struggle to get the diapers they need and the broader effects on babies, parents, and our community.

Diapers are a basic need. But for many families, affording enough means making hard choices.

Programs like SNAP and WIC don't cover diapers, leaving families to fit another essential into budgets already stretched by housing, food, healthcare, transportation, and more.

And the tradeoffs are real: in 2025, more than 3 in 10 households struggling to afford enough diapers reported skipping meals to pay for them.
