NOAA is seeking public input on where to focus the search for identifying new Aquaculture Opportunity Areas in U.S. waters. These are defined geographic areas that have been evaluated for commercial aquaculture.

Your feedback will help inform the science-based process for identifying locations with the potential to support sustainable aquaculture while considering environmental, economic, and social impacts.

Make your voice heard by attending one of three public listening sessions or submit a comment through the Federal Register. The deadline for comments is September 14, 2026.

Ever wonder what Knauss Fellows do during their fellowship? Hear from 2026 fellow, Shari Rohret, about her journey at sea.

As the 2026 Pacific Islands Mapping expedition draws to an end, Knauss Fellow Shari Rohret shares her closing reflections, opportunities for reciprocal learning she’s experienced while onboard, and new perspectives gained from nearly a month at sea.

“When my mentor asked if I wanted to join a 25-day expedition just two weeks into my fellowship, I hesitated, but only briefly. I had just moved to a new state and started a new job, and adding nearly a month at sea to the mix felt a little bit chaotic. But I quickly realized that opportunities like this don’t come along every day. Looking back now, I can’t imagine a better way to begin this new chapter.” - Shari Rohret

Check out the rest of Shari’s log documenting her journey at sea over the past month here: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/expedition-feature/live-from-the-field-updates-from-shari/

From URI to Capitol Hill!

Just one month into his NOAA Sea Grant Knauss Fellowship, URI and Roger Williams University School of Law graduate Samuel Filiaggi is already helping bridge the gap between science and policymaking in Washington, D.C.

Working in NOAA's Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs, Sam helps translate complex scientific research into information that supports federal decision-making, showing how science can make a real difference for people and communities.

Sam puts it as, "Ultimately, the goal is getting NOAA to the people through our representatives."
