Acceptable vs Necessary
This is one of the most unresolved questions we address when I first begin working with a client and that I had to ask myself when I got my dog

1. What is your dogs breed? Knowing their full breed will give you a much better idea of their original purpose, habits, and traits. If you're looking to get a dog, this is the best place to start from - find a dog who's breed matches what you would like from your pup.

2. What is my dogs purpose? Yes, each breed will have an original purpose but as a pet owner you will also have a purpose for your pup (i.e
companionship, exercise partner, etc). Make sure you know what youre expecting from your dog, so you can prioritize your efforts.

3. What do you want out of your dog? Now that we know what they're bred for, what their purpose as our pet will be, we can set our priorities to what matters. This is something I ask clients to think a long time about and create a list of most to least important.
Here are a few questions to help you get that list started: Does your dog need to learn "sit", "down"? (most clients only need a "down")
Do they need to walk off leash?
Do you need them to walk directly next to you or just not pull?
What energy level do you need them at?(should they be expected to regulate it or will you have enough time for exercise daily)

DM with your questions and I'll address it in a post. Over 50% of all Americans own a dog so we are a larger community. That means if you have a question or concern, someone else likely does as well.

Lets Talk Training & Play...

Training your dog while they are playing can be very dangerous for you and your dog for a variety of reasons

1. They may become a very well trained dog

2. They may begin to enjoy training

3. They may begin responding to commands better

4. They may learn to effectively processes their stimulation

SO... unless you're interested on a well trained dog like Basha aka BABYDOG aka Puppa... 🤷🏿‍♂️😁

Basha F. Baby , Please Say The Baby

Baby Dog must carry something out of the house anytime we go on a walk. Its a random habit that started one day and stuck. Now our process is collar, random object, leash, and then out the door(by command ofc)!

Let's Talk... Recall (Natural & UnCommanded)

I look at Recall in 2 different ways and I train them for different results. There is the "Recall" command and there is a natural Recall that all dogs have.

In this video we are seeing an uncommanded Recall. When talking about the topic, its often not discussed or even addressed that most of our dogs know exactly how to recall before we ever even tell them. Often times in dog training there is a habit to complicate the ideas we want our dogs to execute because we don't not consider the dogs natural skills.

So the questions are, what does natural recall even look like? How do I utilize that to actually get my dog to recall? How does natural recall play into teaching my dog to recall on command?

1. We begin by building our relationship with our pups on a daily basis. Spend time together so they natually want to be around you more often. This begins in the house, with playtime, feeding (by hand or by games), leashed walks, etc. The gial is to create a strong bond that qllows your dog to understand you are the biggest reward.
Begin building a relationship with your dogs using the same principle as when you're looking at commanded recall:
•I will not call you unless I absolutely need you
*If I need you, I will go to you before calling out for you.

2. The distance your dog is able to Recall from and be allowed to explore should be directly reflected in how responsible they are.
Start short then work your way up. Begin with a short leash and 'stops' while out on a walk. Teach them, when you stop and they return to you, the walk can continue. You are saying nothing and doing nothing when you stop. At first, you can encourage their return by taking a few steps backwards. This part will require the most patience because you're waiting to see your dogs natural response. Once they return, you mark (good) and reward.
Then you move to a longer leash and repeat. Then you can begin to release the leash, stop, and wait for them to come back. Eventually moving to off leash Recall when you see they are responsible enough to progress

Lets Talk... Recall (the command)

I look at Recall in 2 different ways and I train them for different results. There is the "Recall" command and there is a natural Recall that all dogs have.

In this video we are seeing a commanded Recall. When talking about the topic this is the most common way we perceive recalling a dog and thats why I've chosen to begin here.

So the question is, how do we teach a dog to return to us when we call out? And just as importantly, how do we know how far our dog should be able to go?

1. We train them to understand returning to us is always rewarding AND always a non-negotiable. This begins on leashed walks, in the house, and at all times not just during the moment when you NEED them to come back. Begin building a relationship with your dogs that is founded on 2 principles:
•If I call, you must come and you will be rewarded for doing so
•I will not call unless I need you to come

2. The distance your dog is able to Recall from and be allowed to explore should be directly reflected in how responsible they are. Start short then work your way up. Begin with a short leash and 'stops' while out on a walk. Teach them, when you stop and call them back to you, the must come before the walk can continue. Then you move to a longer leash and repeat. Then you can begin to release the leash, and call them back. Eventually moving to off leash Recall when you see they are responsible enough to progress
