Today, the Church rejoices as we celebrate the feast of one of the most beloved saints of modern times: Saint Pio of Pietrelcina—Padre Pio, the humble Capuchin friar, priest, confessor, mystic, and faithful son of the Church. His life was extraordinary, but Padre Pio never wanted people to become fascinated merely by the extraordinary things that surrounded him. He wanted souls to encounter Jesus Christ.
That is the heart of Padre Pio’s life. Beneath the stigmata, the miracles, the spiritual battles, the countless hours spent hearing confessions, and the stories of his mystical experiences was one simple reality: Padre Pio belonged entirely to Jesus.
His life can be summarized in the words of Saint Paul: “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” Padre Pio did not seek his own glory. He sought to allow Christ to live through him.
And perhaps that is the first lesson this great saint gives us today: holiness is not about becoming extraordinary in the eyes of the world; holiness is about becoming completely surrendered to God.
St. Padre Pio, pray for us!
