Walking in the New Identity
Reading: Ephesians 4:22-32
Devotional:
Knowing that you have a new identity and actually living from that new identity are two different things. Paul understood this. This is why he does not simply declare the new creation and move on. He instructs believers to put off the old self and put on the new self. The language is deliberate and practical -- it is the language of a daily decision.
You cannot bury your old labels until you identify what they are. You cannot walk in your new identity until you know what it says. This is why the word of God must be heard again and again. Faith comes by hearing. The world has been speaking its version of your identity into you for years. The renewal of your mind requires that the voice of God speak louder and more consistently than the voice of the old labels.
Today is the day to walk out of the grave. Not tomorrow. Not when you feel more ready. The grave is behind you. The glorious day is ahead. You are chosen. You are forgiven. You are beloved. You are free. You are alive in Christ. That is your label now. Wear it.
Personal Reflection: What would it look like for you to live tomorrow as though your new identity in Christ is completely and entirely true? What decisions would you make differently?
Practical Application: Close this week by writing a brief personal declaration of identity based on what Scripture says about you. Read it aloud each morning for the next thirty days. Let the truth of who God says you are become the loudest voice in your life.

You Are Who God Says You Are
Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:14-21
Devotional: The world is a relentless label maker. It tells you what beauty looks like, what success looks like, what worth looks like -- and then, in the same breath, it tells you that you will never quite measure up to any of those things. It gives you a standard and then moves the standard. It offers an identity and then withdraws it. This is the nature of a counterfeit.
But God's identity is not counterfeit. It does not shift. It does not expire. It is not contingent on your performance or your appearance or your productivity. Second Corinthians 5:17 declares that if any person is in Christ, they are a new creation. The old has gone. The new has come. This is not a process that is still underway -- it is a declaration of what is already true.
Jesus did not simply save your soul. He renamed your life. He rewrote your story. He replaced every label that sin, the world, and the enemy had placed upon you with something that will outlast every earthly circumstance.
Personal Reflection: Which of the world's labels have you found most difficult to let go of? What would change in your daily life if you fully believed what God says about who you are?
Practical Application: Make a two-column list. In the first column, write the labels that sin, the world, or other people have placed on you. In the second column, write what Scripture says in place of each one. Refer to passages such as Romans 8:1, Ephesians 1:4-5, and 1 Peter 2:9.

Once Dead, Now Alive
Reading: Ephesians 2:1-7
Devotional: The Apostle Paul describes the condition of every person before Christ with a word that is difficult to absorb: dead. Not struggling. Not confused. Not on the wrong path. Dead. Dead in trespasses and sins. It is a description that the world finds offensive, because the world measures life by activity, achievement, and ambition.
But spiritual death has nothing to do with how busy you are. A person can be a celebrated professional, a devoted parent, a respected leader, and still be spiritually dead -- still carrying the label that sin and the world have placed upon them, still without the one thing that can make them truly alive.
The mercy of God intervenes. Ephesians 2:4 describes God as being rich in mercy. Not merely willing to extend mercy, but rich in it -- overflowing with it. And because of that mercy, those who were dead have been made alive together with Christ. The old label of hopeless has been replaced. You now carry the label of raised.
Personal Reflection: What does it mean to you personally that God, who is rich in mercy, looked at your condition and chose to act on your behalf? Sit with the weight of that for a moment.
Practical Application: Write out Ephesians 2:4-5 on a notecard and place it somewhere you will see it each morning. Let the truth that you have been made alive in Christ be the first identity statement you encounter each day.

Dead to Sin, Alive to God
Reading: Romans 6:8-14
Devotional: There is a phrase in Romans 6 that deserves slow and careful attention. Paul writes that death no longer has dominion. Not that death has been weakened, or that death has been pushed to the margins -- but that it no longer rules. The power structure has been completely overturned for the believer in Christ.
Before Christ, sin was your master. It chose your identity for you. It labeled you in your worst moments, in your deepest shame, in your repeated failures. But Paul says that because you are united with Christ in his resurrection, sin is no longer your master. You are now under grace.
This does not mean the old labels stop whispering. It means you now have the authority, in Christ, to refuse them. You do not obey God in order to become new. You obey because you already are new.
Personal Reflection: In what areas of your life does sin still feel like it is in charge? Where have you been living as though the old master still holds the keys?
Practical Application: Read Romans 6:11 slowly and deliberately. Practice what Paul calls "reckoning" -- counting as true the fact that you are dead to sin and alive to God. Do this each morning this week before you rise from bed.

Buried Beneath the Old
Reading: Romans 6:1-7
Devotional: Every person carries labels. Some were spoken over you in childhood. Some were whispered behind your back. Some you rehearsed to yourself in the quiet moments when no one else was listening. Failure. Broken. Not enough. These labels did not merely describe you -- they defined you, and they had real power over the direction of your life.
But the Apostle Paul writes that your old self was crucified with Christ. This is not a poetic suggestion. It is a declaration of finished work. The identity that sin constructed for you -- the one built out of your worst moments and deepest shame -- was nailed to the cross alongside Jesus. It was buried in a tomb.
The question worth sitting with today is this: are you still visiting the grave of something that no longer has authority over you?
Personal Reflection: What labels have you carried the longest? Write them down. Acknowledge their weight. Then acknowledge that Christ has already buried them.
Practical Application: Identify one label from your past that you have continued to live under. Speak aloud Romans 6:6 and declare that the old self it represents has been crucified with Christ.
