Thank you @nytopinion for asking Martin to photograph this beautiful portfolio for America’s 250th birthday, showcasing 13 men who dress up as George Washington “interpreters” at historical parks and commemorations from Virginia to Washington. See the full portfolio at the link in bio. “I chose to use a large format camera for this series, using film and a shallow depth of field to give the images a painterly quality. Photographing this way is a cumbersome and slow process. There is not much spontaneity; it is very deliberate and the subjects have to hold very still. They settle in, as if their portraits were being painted.” Photographer: @martinschoeller Photo Editor: @sarabpix Photo Assistants: @sarahkeum, @vanessa.rojodelavega Makeup: @samniedospial, @kimreyesmakeup Color Correction: @jl_retouching #8x10 #filmphotography 07/12/2026
