From the open road back to the exam room!

After two months exploring the country on a cross-country adventure, Dr. Perret is officially back! We're so excited to have him caring for our patients again.

You'll find Dr. Perret in the clinic:

• Tuesday
• Wednesday

While he was away, Dr. Z has been taking excellent care of our patients all summer. Now it's her turn for a much-deserved vacation! She'll be back with us on Thursday.

Flat-faced pets are at higher risk in the Louisiana heat! ☀️

If you share your home with a Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pug, Boston Terrier, Shih Tzu, Boxer, Persian cat, or other brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, summer temperatures can be especially dangerous.

These pets have narrowed airways that make it harder for them to cool themselves by panting. That means they can overheat much faster than other dogs and cats—even after a short walk or a few minutes of play.

Watch for these warning signs:
🔴Heavy or excessive panting
🔴 Excessive drooling
🔴 Weakness or slowing down
🔴 Difficulty breathing or noisy breathing
🔴 Bright red or pale gums
🚨 Collapse or inability to stand

Help keep your flat-faced pet safe:
✅ Keep outdoor time short.
✅ Always provide fresh water and shade.
✅ Stay in air-conditioned spaces during the hottest part of the day.
🚫 Never leave your pet in a parked car—even for a minute.

If your pet is struggling to breathe or you think they may be overheating, call our clinic immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and early treatment can save lives.

Summer in southeast Louisiana can be brutal—not just for us, but for our pets!

Dogs and cats can overheat quickly, and heat-related illness can become life-threatening in a short amount of time.

Know the early warning signs:
- Excessive panting
- Excessive drooling
- Slowing down or refusing to walk
- Weakness or unusual tiredness

These signs are an emergency and may indicate heat stroke:
🚨 Vomiting or diarrhea
🚨 Disorientation or confusion
🚨 Bright red gums
🚨 Collapse or inability to stand

If you notice any of these emergency signs, move your pet to a cool area, offer small amounts of water if they are alert, and seek veterinary care immediately. Every minute counts.

The best prevention is avoiding outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, providing plenty of fresh water and shade, and never leaving a pet in a parked car—even for a few minutes.

📞 If you think your pet may be suffering from heat exhaustion or heat stroke, don't wait. Call our clinic right away so we can advise you on the next steps and get your pet the care they need. If it's after hours or your pet has collapsed or is unresponsive, go to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital immediately.
