In Romans 6, Paul answers a shocking question: If God’s grace is completely free, does that mean Christians can simply continue living in sin?

His response is emphatic — but then he takes us much deeper.

Why do genuine Christians sometimes struggle with the same sins over and over? What does it really mean that we have “died to sin”? If sin no longer has authority over us, why does temptation still feel so powerful? And how does understanding who we are in Christ actually help us gain victory in everyday life?

This Sunday, we’ll look at the connection between grace, our union with Christ, the continuing battle with the flesh, and the renewal of our minds.

Romans 6 doesn’t just tell us to "try harder". It teaches us to understand what has already happened to us — and then to begin living according to what is now true.

Paul spends the opening chapters of Romans building his case - and then Romans 5 opens with one huge word:

Therefore...

In other words, because the gospel is true, Paul starts drawing some conclusions.

If you have been justified by faith, what can you now say with absolute confidence about your life? What is true about you, even when you don’t feel it? Even when you’ve had a terrible week? Even when your own heart is accusing you and reminding you of everything you’ve done wrong?

Why do so many Christians still live like God is angry with them, distant from them, or waiting to drag them back into court?

A lot of believers know the gospel, but they have never really followed the gospel all the way to its conclusions.

This Sunday, we’re going to open Romans 5 and ask one powerful question:

Because the gospel is true… what is now true about you?

Everybody loves something new.

A new insight. A new revelation. A new way of seeing God that nobody has ever heard before.

But when it comes to doctrine, “new” is not always good. In fact, one of the safest questions we can ask is: "Is this Biblical?"

This Sunday, in Romans 4, Paul is going exactly this! He is showing us that justification by faith is not some brand new idea he invented. It is not a break from the Old Testament.

It is not a new idea

It's an old idea. Ancient doctrine. Rooted in Abraham. Sung about by David. Witnessed by the Law and the Prophets.

This Sunday we're in Romans chapter 3! This is the big turning point in Romans - where the two words, "But now" change everything.

Up until this point, God has been showing us the truth about ourselves: we have all fallen short. We’ve failed our own standards, broken God’s law, and tried in so many ways to justify ourselves.

Without intervention, we would be hopelessly guilty and helpless. But God did not leave us helpless. "But now" everything has changed. And we find out what that is in this chapter!

In Romans 2, Paul continues to build his case.

He’s not rushing to the good news yet. He’s laying the foundation so that when the good news comes, we actually understand it and embrace it fully!

In these opening chapters, Paul is putting everybody in the same boat: The wild and rebellious person; the moral person who knows what’s wrong with everybody else; and the experienced, religious person.

Paul is saying: none of us are able to stand above the rest. Everybody is accountable. Everybody needs a Savior.

This Sunday, we’ll keep walking through Romans as we build the kind of faith that is real, sturdy, and strong enough to build a life and legacy on.

We feel it when something is unfair, when evil goes unanswered, or when the world seems corrupt and the scales feel unbalanced.
