That time when the University of Iowa and Iowa State University worked together on the Red-shouldered Hawk project. Go Hawks!

We are loving this photo of Little Horn sunbathing during his annual catastrophic molt! Many species of birds will molt all of their head feathers at once to replace them with healthy new ones. He looks very dramatic. 🙂 Thanks for the great photo, Dom!

Today is International Vulture Awareness Day! IVAD shines a spotlight on the ecological importance of vultures, which are often misunderstood and underappreciated. Vultures act as nature’s cleanup crew by consuming carcasses efficiently, preventing the spread of diseases, and maintaining ecosystem balance.

Over 70% of vulture species are threatened, endangered, or critically endangered. The largest threats to vultures worldwide are poisonings, poaching, collisions, electrocutions, and habitat loss.

We are lucky to have both species that are native to North America that live at our center; Vlad (Black Vulture) and Shiloh (Turkey Vulture). They are quite fascinating and are a highlight of many of our raptor programs!

We appreciate Hawkeye Football partnering with us to help bring awareness to Iowa's raptors and the natural habitats and resources that they represent. Go Hawks!
