We were excited to welcome Cambridge City Councilor Ayah Al Zubi to our warehouse this week! Councilor Al-Zubi is deeply committed to improving food access in Cambridge and is actively engaged with the nonprofits leading this work across the city. She asked thoughtful questions about our local food system, shared ideas for future collaboration, and even jumped onto the volunteer line to support our Just Eats program.

We were honored to welcome Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley to one of our Cambridge Public School District (Official Site) Summer School Markets this week!

Congresswoman Pressley spent time with our team discussing the impacts that recent federal cuts are having on Food For Free, our partners, and the communities we serve, and the importance of ensuring everyone has access to fresh, healthy, culturally relevant food.

The Spot was also on site distributing backpacks to community members. Congresswoman Pressley jumped right in to help children and families pick out a bag of their choosing and connect with community members throughout the market with warmth, dignity, and respect.

We are grateful for Congresswoman Pressley’s partnership and for taking the time to learn more about the work happening in our communities and the continued need to ensure that families have access to the resources they need.

We are incredibly grateful to State Representative Marjorie Decker Decker for once again securing an earmark for Food For Free in the Massachusetts FY27 State Budget! Representative Decker has been a tireless supporter of Food For Free for many years, and her continued partnership has helped sustain the critical school-based food access programs we operate with Cambridge Public Schools.
This earmark will help Food For Free operate our School Market and Carrot Card programs in Cambridge, strengthening access to nutritious food for local students and families. We're deeply thankful for Representative Decker's leadership and steadfast commitment to our community. It truly takes all of us working together to make this work possible.

We're proud to partner with the Somerville Community Fridges to help make sure good food reaches our neighbors instead of going to waste.

Here's what that partnership looks like:
🥬 We store fresh food from Boston Area Gleaners for the Somerville Community Fridges until community fridge volunteers are ready to pick it up.
🍎 Any leftover food from our Summer School Markets is donated to the community fridges, helping nourish even more community members.
🚚 Our Operations Team also delivers recovered food that isn't claimed by our partner organizations, ensuring it can still find a home in the community.

Having access to the Somerville Community Fridges gives us another way to keep fresh food out of the waste stream and available to anyone who needs it.

Together, we're building a stronger, more food-secure community—one community fridge at a time. 💚

Behind every meal is a step toward stability. 💙

Our partnership with Caspar, Inc. CASPAR Emergency Shelter, a Bay Cove Human Services program, helps ensure that people experiencing homelessness have access to fresh, nourishing food—whether they're meeting with the First Step street outreach team in Cambridge and Somerville or staying at the shelter.

Food For Free is proud to provide 60% of the food CASPAR serves, making us their only source of fresh, healthy food. From ready-to-eat sandwiches and salads to yogurt, fruit cups, and bread, the food we deliver is often in someone's hands—and nourishing them—the very same day.

Together, we're helping fill more than just plates. We're filling a critical gap in care with dignity, compassion, and community.

We owe a big thanks to our friends at The Greater Boston Food Bank for helping us expand Food For Free's capacity to deliver healthy food through a recent $70,000 Community Investment grant!

GBFB's support helped bridge the final funding gap to install a new 55° Walk-In Cooler and the heavy-duty bumpers needed to safeguard our warehouse and transportation fleet from accidental damage!

And the investments don't stop there! We'll share future updates in the coming months as we finalize other projects. Together, we have the power to End Hunger Here.

🌞🥕 Summer School Markets are back!

Food For Free is proud to kick off another season of Summer School Markets, helping ensure families have access to fresh, healthy food even when school is out. Our first market of the summer at the East Somerville Community School welcomed 175 families, providing them with nourishing groceries for the week.

Summer break doesn't mean the need for food access takes a break. Our dedicated staff and volunteers work together all season long to keep these markets running and support families throughout the summer.

A special thank you to the Public Schools liaisons who volunteered their time to help make yesterday's market a success. Your partnership and commitment to the community make this work possible. 💚
