When it comes to starting young horses, Justin Briggs breaks it down in a way that actually makes sense. In these sessions on Ride TV, Briggs walks through how he uses his hands, his legs, and his spurs to get different things done on a c**t, and why the order he uses them in matters.

START WITH YOUR HANDS
For Briggs, the hands come first. Every time.

“Running barrels, roping, both, you’re riding that horse ahead. They should be steering off of your hands, so that should be your first cue.”

His hand position stays up, a little above the swells, not down low the way a lot of riders were taught early on. When his body position is up, the horse comes up with him. He keeps his reins short enough that if he pulls, he isn’t pulling far, but.... FULL BLOG on BarrelRacing.com. 🔗 https://bit.ly/BriggsHandsBlog26

“A lot of times we get in the habit of thinking about getting to the next barrel once we realize we’re not going to hit the barrel we’re going into. But this is where we need to go forward and give our horse that room to be snappy and have a really clean finish. I see a lot of people turn at the half-barrel point but we need to turn at the three-quarter point." - Jordon Briggs Professional Barrel Racer

Can a barrel horse have TOO much bend? Yes! When a horse is overly bent around the barrel instead of framed up, they’re likely diving in with their shoulders and swinging out their hip, which can lead to unbalanced turns, tipped barrels and lost time. Jordon Briggs shares her tips for troubleshooting an overly bendy horse in this Ride TV blog. 🔗 https://bit.ly/BriggsBendyHorse26

We spent all month celebrating the women who built this sport and the ones running it now. We're closing it out with the part that never makes the highlight reel.

A lot of the women you watch every weekend travel with highly trained protection dogs. They carry guns, knives and other weapons.
There are cameras on their trailers, and their location stays shared with someone who'd know where to look.
Plenty of them won't tell fans where they're entered until they've already left town behind a pack of other trailers, because too many people have shown up with the wrong intentions.

The men they rodeo alongside can post a whole fall schedule and never think twice.

So if your favorite athlete doesn't post where she's headed next... now you know why.

This sport is one big family, and that means we all look out for each other. If something feels off in the barns or the parking lot, say something. Walk her to the trailer. Keep an eye on those more vulnerable than you. Nobody should have to carry this alone.

Thank you Mane 'n Tail for bringing this awareness all month long. 🖤
