Later never came for Axel.
And I think thatās one of the hardest things to accept.
When Axel beat cancer, we thought we had been given so much more time with him. But life had other plans, and just a few months later, we lost him suddenly and completely unexpectedly.
Anyone who has lost a dog probably knows this feeling. No matter how much time you had with them, somehow it never feels like enough. You look back and think about the walks you couldāve taken, the adventures you kept putting off, the times they wanted to play but you were busy, or all the little things you said youād do later.
Life gets busy. Work, family, plans, responsibilities⦠and we convince ourselves there will always be another day.
We had planned to take Axel and Karma to the beach in early May. We said weād do it the next weekend.
Axel passed away April 26th.
That next weekend never came.
I carry some guilt about things like that. I think I probably always will. There are so many moments I wish I could go back and say yes instead of later.
But I also have to remind myself that grief has a way of making us focus on everything we wish we had done instead of everything we actually did.
Axel had seven years of being loved beyond measure. He had beach mornings, walks, adventures, treats, cuddles, vacations, ridiculous amounts of attention, and a home where he never had to question how much he was loved.
And if youāve lost a pet and find yourself thinking about all the things you wish you had done differently, itās okay to feel that way. Itās normal.
Just donāt let those thoughts convince you that you didnāt do enough.
To them, you were enough. You were their home, their comfort, their favorite person, and their whole world.
They left this life knowing exactly how much they were loved.
So when you can, choose now instead of later.
Because sometimes later becomes never.
Noooo no no no no⦠yes!

Losing Axel has taught me more about grief, love, and moving forward than I ever expected. š¤
I wanted to share a few of those lessons because I know so many of you have experienced this kind of loss too. Hopefully something here makes you feel a little less alone in it.
If youāve lost a pet you loved deeply, whatās something the experience taught you? Iād love for you to share it below.
But why is it the females that are so crazy š¤£

My little beach model šļø
Karma may not like getting her toes in the water, but she certainly has no problem getting her nose in the sand. Give this girl a ball and sheās perfectly happy staying right on dry land.
These pictures were actually taken before we adopted Asher, and we canāt wait to take him on his first trip to the beach and see what he thinks. Just as soon as this Florida weather decides to cooperate.
Do you think Asher is going to be a water dog⦠or join Karma safely on the sand??

Asher update: Itās been just over two weeks since we adopted Asher, and heās settling into our home nicely.
Heās quickly learned that the couch is fair game, but he also loves all the dog beds around the house. He sleeps through the night like a champ and has made himself VERY comfortable here. š
Weāre still working on getting him fully house trained, hence the fashionable belly band. He can easily hold it through the night, so weāre being patient and working through the occasional marking and accidents during the day.
He was a little underweight when we adopted him, but heās already starting to fill out nicely. Heās great on a leash, loves his walks and has been surprisingly easy to train and quick to learn new commands.
And of course, he and Karma are already becoming inseparable. They love playing together, although sometimes we have to remind them to turn the chaos down a few notches. š Karma has done such a great job making him feel comfortable, and watching their bond grow has been our favorite part.
Heās still very much a big puppy with plenty to learn, but two weeks in, we couldnāt be happier with how well heās doing. š¤š¾
I think they just became best friends!
