Hopefully everyone was able to attend and enjoy the recent celebration of the Town of Speedway's 100th Anniversary! We took a short hiatus from highlighting the department's history, but we are back in action this month!

This month we would like to highlight our Reserve Division and the service to the town these fine men and women have provided over many decades.

For those who aren't aware, many police departments have volunteer police officers who give of their time and talents to their community. These officers undergo state-mandated training before completing in-house field training with established officers of the department. After the completion of training, these officers serve their community alongside the full-time officers. As you can imagine, volunteering in this way is a very rare and noble thing that we greatly appreciate! The Speedway Police Department's Reserve Division has ranged from just a few officers up to several dozen over the past decades.

I could not find an exact date for the first reserve officers, but it appears the first rules and regulations for this division was established in 1966. These rules identified expectations such as work hours each month, assignments, special events, and other important details. Further additions to the reserve division would come in September of 1972 when it was decided to add a rank system to the reserve division.

One particularly interesting point of SPD history was "The Great Patch Debate" of 1970. At a meeting on January 26, 1970, a committee was formed to discuss adding a small patch that said "reserve" under the department shoulder patches worn by officers. The intention of this added identification was not to downgrade the Reserve Division in any way, but it was believed that "it was the public's right to know who they are dealing with." Members of the reserve division felt differently, believing it unnecessarily set them apart from the full-time members. The issue came to a head on July 1, 1970 when the reserve officers were ordered to wear the patch or face the suspension of their police powers. In the end, several officers resigned over the issue, with some of them returning after the patch idea was finally tossed. Today, the Reserve Division wears the same uniform and operates the same way as the full-time officers.

Today, the Speedway Police Department's Reserve Division is down to just a few members as several longtime officers have recently retired after decades of service. As you can imagine, volunteering thousands of hours over the span of a career is quite an accomplishment and one we respect greatly. Replacing these experienced and dedicated officers obviously presents quite a challenge. If you are interested in serving your community in this way, reach out to us for further information!

Please join us in congratulating Sgt. Brian Welsh on his upcoming retirement!

After 20 years of dedicated service in law enforcement, Sgt. Welsh is officially retiring from the Speedway Police Department.

Throughout two decades of service, Sgt. Welsh has demonstrated professionalism, leadership, and a strong commitment to protecting and serving the community. During his career, he has worked alongside countless officers and has made a lasting impact on both the department and the people we serve.

A 20-year career in policing represents thousands of shifts, late nights, missed holidays, difficult calls, memorable moments, and years of putting others before yourself. Reaching this milestone is an accomplishment worthy of recognition.
We thank Sgt. Welsh for his 20 years of service, sacrifice, and dedication and wish him and his family nothing but the best as he begins this next chapter.

Congratulations on your retirement and thank you for your commitment to our department and the Town of Speedway.

The Speedway Police Department is providing the following information regarding law enforcement activity in the Runaway Bay Apartments.

Officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving a fi***rm at the Runaway Bay Apartments. During the investigation, information was received that a possible armed subject may have been barricaded inside the apartment. Out of an abundance of caution, the Speedway Police Department SWAT Team was activated.

A search warrant was obtained, and the apartment was safely searched. The individual involved was ultimately determined not to be inside the apartment. All occupants have been located and are safe and accounted for.

Officers collected evidence and photographs related to the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for review and consideration of criminal charges.

There is no known threat to the public at this time.

We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation while officers worked to safely resolve the situation. Additional information may be released when appropriate and when doing so will not compromise the integrity of the investigation.

The Speedway Police Department has seen an increase in vehicle break-ins over the past several days. We want to remind everyone to take a few simple precautions to help protect your property:

Always lock your vehicle, even when parked at home.
Remove valuables from your vehicle or keep them secured and out of sight.
Keep exterior lights on at night and consider installing motion-activated floodlights.
Stay alert and be aware of suspicious activity around your property and throughout your neighborhood.
Look out for your neighbors and report unusual activity.

As always, if you see something suspicious, call the police. If you believe a crime is in progress, call 911 .

Taking a few extra precautions can go a long way in making your vehicle and property a less attractive target.

While out on patrol, our officers spotted something a little out of the ordinary… 🥔🚓

The Famous Idaho Potato Tour made its way through Speedway, and our officers couldn’t pass up the opportunity for a quick photo with one of the most recognizable “vehicles” on the road!

You never know what you’ll come across while out patrolling our community. Today, it just happened to be a giant potato.
