School counselors support students' emotional well-being, relationships, and learning, and help families and teachers work together so students have what they need to succeed at school.

These positions are supported in part by the local Educational Programs and Operations levy. Learn more at spokaneschools.org/2026levy.

LEARN ABOUT LEVIES: How are schools funded in Washington state? Take a minute to watch a video explaining the different sources.

While the majority comes from the state and federal governments, about 15% of the Spokane Public Schools annual budget is funded by a local 3-year Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) levy to support programs, staffing and services not fully funded by the state.

Spokane voters will consider a School levy on the Nov. 3 ballot. We invite you to learn more at SpokaneSchools.org/2026Levy.

LEVY RESOLUTION: Earlier this year, the School Board approved a resolution placing an Educational Programs and Operations (EP&O) levy on the Nov. 3, 2026, ballot for voters residing in Spokane Public Schools boundaries.

This levy would replace the EP&O levy approved by voters in 2024, which collects funds for 2025, 2026, and 2027 budget years, to collect funds in 2028, 2029, and 2030.

The EP&O levy funds about 15% of Spokane Public Schools' budget, supporting academics, activities and athletics, and services for students.

Learn more about the levy and school funding at SpokaneSchools.org/2026Levy.

REFLECTIONS: “9/11 is not a memory for them. It’s history.”

Karrie Docterman-King has taught history and social studies at John R. Rogers High School for 32 years. She was with students in her classroom 25 years ago today, helping them process the news about the terrorist attacks that morning.

Her current students were born years after Sept. 11, 2001. When Docterman teaches about the events, she invites students into a conversation about perspectives in history.

Learn more about her lessons in interviews with local media:
