September was one of those months I know I’ll look back on for a long time.

I had the opportunity to film the 7th rendition of Dan Staton’s Public Land Hustle and capture two incredible elk hunts in New Mexico and Montana.

This was my first ever hunting season and my first time filming an elk hunt. I didn’t grow up hunting, so there was a lot I had to learn on the fly. Keeping up with Dan, staying quiet when it mattered, carrying camera gear through long days, dealing with freezing rain and wet conditions, and still having to be ready to get the shot when the moment came.

Montana alone put over 100 miles on our feet.

There were moments I was completely exhausted and honestly wanted to call it and go home. But those moments ended up teaching me the most. I learned how much heart I have and how far I’m capable of pushing myself when things get mentally and physically difficult.

Getting to experience this alongside Dan was something I’m incredibly grateful for. Watching the way he works, the way he provides, and the depth of his connection and dedication to hunting showed me a side of the craft I couldn’t have learned anywhere else. On top of that, I walked away with a whole new understanding of hunting, strategy, and what it takes to do it the right way.

Two successful hunts. Hundreds of miles. A lot of blood, sweat, and cold mornings.

And a hell of a lot learned along the way.

I’ve never shot a bow in my life… 😂

But I’ve spent the last year getting a front-row seat to what bowhunting is really about.

Wyoming and Montana with Dan from ElkShape was my first taste of it. Long days, early mornings, miles of walking, close calls, frustration, excitement, and eventually watching all that work pay off.

I may not know much about shooting a bow yet, but I’ve learned pretty quickly that the hunt is about a whole lot more than the shot.

In 2 weeks, I get to experience my first elk hunt in New Mexico.

Wyoming & Montana. First time hunting. First time filming a hunt. And definitely one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever taken on.

Keeping up with Dan, finding the shot, staying out of the way while still getting the shot, and trying to capture everything happening in the moment pushed me harder than I expected. There were plenty of times I questioned whether I was actually going to be able to keep up.

But we got the job done. And we did it the way it needed to be done.

I can’t say enough good things about Dan, not just for the way he works, but for the person he is. Getting to spend that much time around someone who constantly pushes himself, and naturally pushes the people around him to be better, was something I’m incredibly grateful for.

This trip was something I never would have expected myself to be doing, and honestly, I wasn’t prepared for how much I’d take away from it.

I learned a lot about hunting. A lot about filming. A lot about myself. And probably most importantly, a lot about the kind of people I want to surround myself with.

Grateful for the miles, the lessons, the challenges, and the memories.

Elk Immersion Camp
Not every hunt starts in the mountains…

Sometimes it starts with long days on the range. Broken arrows. Tough conversations. Sweat. Laughter. Learning to slow down, trust the process, and put in the work long before opening morning.

Capturing Elk Immersion Camp was a reminder that success in the field is built long before you ever hear a bugle.
