If your kid lost their home in the fires, there's $100 waiting for them to replace their gear.

Keep Kids Moving is a new fund putting $100 gift cards to local sports and recreation stores in the hands of kids who were burned out — any youth who's a high school senior or younger. Families start with their kid's school counselor, who connects them to an application asking what equipment they need and when they need it.

That timing detail matters right now. Winter gear requests are being filled over the next couple of months, so ski, skate and basketball needs are covered if you get the request in.

The fund came together from the Spokane Parks Foundation, the Northwest Athletic Trainers' Association, City of Spokane Parks & Recreation, and the Spokane Public Schools, Mead and Nine Mile Falls districts, seeded with a donation from the H.O.M.E. Starts Here fund.

Mayor Lisa Brown put the reasoning simply — getting back to the things that make kids feel like kids is part of recovery. Practice, teammates, a familiar routine.

Nobody replaces a house with $100. But a kid who can't show up to practice because their cleats burned is a kid sitting at home instead of with their team.

If you want to add to the fund, donations go through the Spokane Parks Foundation.

About 4,500 people ran four miles through downtown Spokane on Sunday morning and raised $350,000 for local cancer patients. Both are records.
Here's the part that explains it. Race director Jon Neill dropped this year's entry fee to $25, deliberately, after the Spokane Complex fires — he wanted the barrier as low as it could go and the community in one place for a morning. Registration sold out two days before race day. Neill said the price brought back people who'd run it before and pulled in plenty who never had.
The course loops past Gonzaga with live music, cheerleaders and vendors the whole way, which is by design. Neill describes the goal as providing the ultimate distraction.
And every runner writes a name on their bib — someone they're running for. That tradition started three years ago.
Tom Sahlberg has been to all four Boulevard Races and calls himself an OG of the event. He's a 13-year Stage 4 cancer survivor, and he ran Sunday with his wife Jo and their son. He said this year's was the most organized and supportive one yet.
Every dollar goes to the Community Cancer Fund, which fills gaps in cancer services across the Inland Northwest. Organizers are already expecting 5,000 runners next year.
Donations are still open at boulevardrace.com.
Who would you write on your bib?
