I’ve always been a sucker for a big plain bay thoroughbred, there’s something so classic and elegant about them.

Does anyone remember back in the 80s and 90s the equestrian decor was predominantly hunter green and red with fox hunters? Almost every barn had statue of a fox hunter with a lantern at the entrance to the driveway.

I’ve always pictured Chubby out fox hunting, leading the pack and jumping big hedges, with me in my little red hunt coat following the hounds.

After his latest injury, which will be 3 years ago in the spring, I just assumed he was a pasture puff, most of them don’t recover super well from tendon injuries. He hasn’t taken a lame step yet, even when his injury was fresh, and he’s moving great on the steep hills here so, I’m hoping this spring we can try again, and just maybe, one day, you’ll see him on the hunt. ❤️🐴

Rolo and Liv Cheezin’ for a Cheez-It. 🧀🐴

I don’t typically feed my horses total garbage for snacks, and I try to limit my own processed food too but, I love Cheez-Its. Rolo and Liv were less impressed. They’d have preferred a carrot.

But apparently even carrots have become controversial.

Obviously, managing a horse’s diet matters. But sometimes I wonder if we’ve swung too far in the other direction. Are some of us proxy dieting through our horses?

I can look at my chunky horse and confidently say, “You need fewer calories,” while simultaneously deciding I absolutely deserve that scoop of ice cream after dinner when I too could benefit from a few less calories. 😂

Finally got the horses move to the hills!!

Man August was a long month…. Fires, work the heat. Looks like the heat is breaking less things are burning and we finally have some better air quality.

Looking forward to getting back to riding and not just feeding these (super cute) hay burners.

I’ve always thought of my horses as pretty lucky. They live in a 5 acre field all day with their buddies. The ones who need special treatment get pulled out for that, whether it’s gluing them back together because they got dinged up or, for special feed because they don’t have teeth (Zuni).

When I left Wenatchee, I felt guilty moving them from the side of a mountain where they were mostly feral for 23 hours a day to a flat boring 5 acre field with no trees, hills or other natural enrichment.

But, I’ve been keeping a secret 👀

It won’t be long until they can go back to the hill side. In addition to enrichment, being in the hills helps keep them fit and, provides plenty of natural desensitization and overall makes for a more sure footed and fit horse under saddle.
