Nonagenarian Eileen McKeon reads to a Kansas City kindergarten class twice a month. She calls the opportunity “an environment of love.”

She’s been volunteering for 13 years, so for her 93rd birthday, the kids and teacher wanted to make it special with a surprise filled with “signs, singing and snacks.”

Reading together creates strong bonds and memories. ARC’s 𝑨𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒔 program encourages parents and kids to laugh, learn and play together. Visit activerelationships.com/training-programs-curricula to learn more. OK

Fort Buchanan strengthens readiness through ‘A Moment for Life’ su***de prevention event 09/25/2026

Su***de prevention is a multi-faceted effort. Puerto Rico’s Fort Buchanan recently hosted a symposium with this in mind.

“We’re trying to take a spiritual, physical and mental approach to create awareness and support our su***de prevention campaign,” said Ashley Hines, Fort Buchanan Army Substance Abuse and Su***de Prevention Program manager.

Lt. Col. Eric Littlejohn added that everyone is carrying something.
“It’s a collective effort to care for one another and take care of the people to your left and right, whether or not they’re in uniform,” Littlejohn said. “We all have hidden wounds.”

Someone is always available at 9-8-8 if you need immediate mental health assistance.

A firehouse tribute to the nine men who never came home after 9/11 09/16/2026

The firefighters of the East 85th Street firehouse in New York City honor their lost heroes every day. One of the ways they do so is through preserving firehouse ‘riding lists’ of who was on duty that fateful day 25 years ago.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art used specialized glue, pins and temperature-controlled glass to ensure lasting preservation.

There are roughly 840 firefighters who served on 9/11 still serving today. These veterans of the brotherhood and all firefighters carry a duty and bond to each other.

“We're here to pass down that tradition," said firefighter Stephen Saucedo, who lost his own brother, a fellow firefighter, on 9/11. "What they taught us, instilled in us and pass it on to the next generation."

Aiming to be the “light within” for so many, Cait Leavey serves others with compassion and hope.

Now a licensed mental health counselor, Cait lost her father, Lt. Joseph G. Leavey on September 11, 2001. A firefighter with Latter 15, he was heroically trying to rescue people from the upper floors of the South Tower when he lost his life.

After the tragedy, Cait attended America’s Camp, where she said the sense of community “allowed for healing to happen.”

Organized for the children who lost a parent, the camp ran from 2001-2011. While there, she designed a small feather that would later become part of one, large phoenix that would serve as reminder of hope and resilience.

Twenty-five years later, Cait’s organization, The Holding Frames, gives people an outlet to turn pain into purpose and process trauma through art.

North Texas brothers capture the hearts of millions with college World Series moment 09/03/2026

Brotherly love and baseball.

A home run and a high-five said it all during the College World Series when older brother Kolby’s team, University of Georgia, played Kyle’s team, The University of Oklahoma, in the semifinals of the College World Series that Oklahoma would go on to win. Kolby blasted a home run in his final college at-bat and Kyle high-fived him on his trip around the bases. A dream come true and an unforgettable memory for a family that has always supported each other.

“We’ve just always loved each other so much,” Kyle said. “It was always that that mattered the most.”

Not long after, Kolby was drafted by his hometown Texas Rangers. Sports encourage teamwork, unity, character-building, sportsmanship, leadership and good competition.
