25 years ago today, our country experienced a day we will never forget.

We remember the 2,977 lives lost. We honor the first responders who ran toward danger when others were running away. We remember the families whose lives changed in an instant and the men and women who answered the call to serve in the years that followed.

And we remember how Americans cared for one another afterward.

Twenty-five years later, that spirit of compassion, service, and looking after our neighbors is still worth holding onto.

Do You Have the Right Documents in Place?

None of us likes to think about a medical emergency, dementia diagnosis, or the unexpected—but having the right legal documents in place can make one of life's hardest moments much easier for the people you love.

Many families don't realize that a Will, Power of Attorney, and Health Care Directive (Living Will) all serve different purposes. Having one document doesn't necessarily mean you have everything you need.

Ask yourself:
✔️ Who could make financial decisions if you couldn't?
✔️ Who would speak with doctors on your behalf?
✔️ Have you documented your wishes for future medical care?
✔️ Is your estate plan up to date after major life changes?

Planning ahead isn't about expecting the worst—it's about giving your family clarity, reducing stress, and protecting your wishes.

💜 “Do not ask me to remember…”

This beautiful poem reminds us of something that every family caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia needs to hear.

When someone is living with dementia, they are not giving you a hard time…
They are having a hard time.

The changes you see are caused by a disease affecting the brain—not stubbornness, laziness, or a lack of effort.

Instead of asking…

❌ “Don’t you remember?”
❌ “I already told you that.”
❌ “Why are you doing this?”

Try…

❤️ “I’m here with you.”
❤️ “You’re safe.”
❤️ “Let’s do this together.”

People living with Alzheimer’s disease may forget names, places, or even yesterday’s events, but they often continue to remember how you made them feel. Your patience, calm voice, gentle touch, and reassurance can reduce anxiety more than correcting their memory ever will.

One of the hardest lessons for families is realizing that we cannot change the disease—but we can change how we respond to it. Meeting your loved one where they are emotionally often leads to less frustration, fewer behaviors, and more meaningful moments together.

This Fourth of July, all of us at Compass Care would like to thank the veterans, military families, and all those who have served our country.

As we celebrate America’s independence, we’re also reminded of the importance of preserving independence for the seniors we serve every day. The freedoms we enjoy were built through the sacrifices of generations before us, and we are honored to help older adults maintain their dignity, choice, and quality of life as they age.

Today, we encourage everyone to take a moment to thank a veteran, spend time with family, and reflect on the blessings of living in a free nation.
