What if the waste we create could become a resource instead? 🌎
That’s the concept behind µBites, a research project from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, developed through NASA’s Deep Space Food Challenge to explore ways of producing food with fewer resources for future long-duration space missions.
With plastic waste continuing to pile up, researchers are exploring new ways to put it to use. In 2025, global plastic consumption reached 225 million tonnes. Yet only around 9% of plastics produced are actually recycled globally.
That’s why researchers are exploring a very different approach: using microbes to transform plastic and agricultural waste into useful food ingredients. Their engineered yeasts can produce proteins, fats, and flavor compounds like vanilla.
However, there’s an important detail: the team is still working toward institutional approval for formal taste testing, while exploring how the technology could eventually work in resource-limited environments like space missions or submarines.
Innovation can definitely challenge the way we use the resources around us. At Bluevua, we’re inspired by that same mindset: finding better ways to make everyday essentials more sustainable.
But that opens the most important question…would you actually eat a cookie made from plastic waste? 👀 Tell us below!

What changes when you cut back on plastic exposure?
That’s what researchers at the University of Western Australia (UWA) explored through the PERTH Trial (Plastic Exposure Reduction Transforms Health).
The study began with 211 healthy adults in Australia, and researchers detected at least six plastic-associated chemicals in every participant. From that group, 60 participants took part in a 7-day randomized controlled trial, reducing plastic touchpoints across food, beverages, kitchenware, and personal-care products. Food was sourced from 100+ producers to minimize plastic contact throughout production and preparation.
After just seven days, urinary levels of several plastic-associated chemicals decreased significantly: BPA by 59.7%, and two phthalate metabolites by 37.5% and 53.5%. The takeaway? Some everyday exposures can change in a relatively short time.
Understanding where they come from can help us make more informed choices about what we eat, use, and bring into our homes.

Your water goes through a lot before it reaches your glass. 💧
And some of what it picks up along the way is better left out. That’s where RO comes in, helping filter out more of the stuff you don’t want in your water. ✨
Know someone who’d find this useful? Send it their way. 💙

Why the built-in TDS monitor? 💧
It lets you see how effectively your RO membrane is reducing dissolved solids, right on the machine.
TDS shows the performance. Your 0.0001 μm RO membrane does the purification.
