Convocation 2026 marked the start of the academic year with a focus on collaboration between Spokane Community College and Spokane Falls Community College. Greater alignment across our colleges means a stronger, more connected experience for the students we serve.

Thank you to Spokane City Council President Betsy Wilkerson, Lance Beck of Greater Spokane Inc., and SPS Superintendent Adam Swinyard for joining us and reflecting on the strength our community showed during the Spokane Complex Fires in August.

"I believe Spokane Colleges is the educational anchor for the community," said Wilkerson.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Katie Kleinhesselink to Spokane Community College (SCC) as our new Dean of Rural Education.

Dr. Kleinhesselink brings two decades of experience expanding educational access and building partnerships in rural communities. In her new role, she will lead SCC's campuses in Colville, Inchelium, Newport, and Republic, working alongside faculty, staff, and community partners to grow opportunity across northeastern Washington.

As a first-generation, rural, working-class graduate herself, she brings both lived experience and professional expertise to this work. We're proud to have her leading the way.

After seven years on the Spokane Colleges Board of Trustees, Steven Yoshihara got a proper sendoff this week.

Fellow trustees and Chancellor Brockbank presented him with a Spokane Colleges baseball jersey, number 3, a nod to his years as an SFCC student athlete. After SFCC, he went on to play baseball at Gonzaga, where he earned his bachelor's degree. Today he serves as Senior Vice President at Washington Trust Bank.

Yoshihara joined the board in 2018.

Spokane Community College (SCC) is launching its Practical Nursing certificate program at the SCC Colville center, giving students across Stevens County and the surrounding tri-counties a path to LPN licensure without relocating. Clinical rotations take place at local healthcare facilities, which means students build relationships with the employers they may go on to work for.

The expansion builds on SCC's Practical Nursing program, reinstated in Spokane in 2025 in response to regional workforce demand.

Applications for the winter cohort are open through September 15.

A reminder that all Spokane Colleges campuses, SCC and SFCC, will be closed Monday, September 7 in observance of Labor Day. Thank you to everyone whose work makes this district run. Regular hours resume Tuesday, September 8.
