A designer and our team can look at the same tile and be answering two completely different questions. They are asking how it reads in the room — the color, the light, the way it sits next to the walnut. We’re asking how it performs in a wet, high-traffic bathroom ten years from now. Grout joints. Slip rating. How it handles a hard-water town. Whether the installer can hold a straight line on a wall that isn’t plumb.

Neither question is more important. The client needs both answers before a single box gets ordered — not halfway through the install when the tile is already on site.

That’s the whole reason we sit at the table during selections instead of showing up after them. The best rooms happen when the designer’s eye and the builder’s experience are in the same conversation early.

Quartzite instead of marble. Plaster instead of wood. Brass instead of nickel. And no TV over the fireplace.

Four choices in one Houston house — none of them made because of how they’d photograph.

Quartzite takes heat and acid the way marble never will, so a kitchen that actually gets cooked in still looks new in year ten. The hood is plaster troweled over a steel frame — one continuous surface, no seams, nothing to date it. Brass ages honestly instead of wearing through like a plated finish. And the screens went into other rooms so the living room could stay for reading, talking, and watching the weather come across the trees.
