NAFDAC ORDERS WITHDRAWAL OF LEVAMISOLE

NAFDAC has directed the withdrawal and prohibited the supply, sale and use of human medicines containing levamisole following a safety review linked to a rare but serious neurological condition called leukoencephalopathy.

37 people died in detention in Minna, Niger State. And now, survivors are telling us what it was like inside that cell.
One survivor described unbearable heat, extreme thirst and people desperately trying to survive.
He said detainees drank their own urine and sweat for moisture, while those who collapsed were met with cries for help from inside the overcrowded cell.
He described a moment when he had lost hope that he would make it out alive.
These are survivor accounts, and the full circumstances and cause of death remain under investigation.
But they raise serious questions about access to water, ventilation, overcrowding, emergency response and the duty of care toward people in custody.

💚 Two outreaches. One community. 229 people reached.

We went into the community to provide healthcare, but we also came away with something just as important: insight into the health challenges families are facing.

Among those reached were 109 pregnant women, and 38% of the adults screened had high blood pressure.

We also found that having a mosquito net does not always mean it is being used. 68% of those asked had not slept under a mosquito net the night before the outreach.

These findings reminded us that healthcare is not only about providing services. It is also about listening, educating, demonstrating and meeting people where they are.

So, for our next outreach, we are doing more:

🥗 Nutrition checks for every child
👨‍👩‍👧 Family planning counselling

Health officials say the deaths and severe illnesses are linked to suspected methanol poisoning from locally prepared alcoholic and herbal concoctions in parts of Ondo State.

Residents have pointed to a popular herbal alcoholic drink known as “Monkey Tail,” but authorities have not confirmed that the drink itself is the source.

Preliminary laboratory testing by NAFDAC found high concentrations of methanol in samples of the suspected concoctions.

Police have arrested 15 people as investigations continue.

⚠️ Methanol is highly toxic. It can cause serious poisoning, including visual impairment, organ failure, and death.

If you experience sudden vision problems, severe headache, difficulty breathing, or altered consciousness after consuming an alcoholic or herbal concoction, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Do not consume unlicensed or unregistered alcoholic/herbal mixtures of unknown composition.
