Calling it a “personal day” sounds very professional. Spending it at the Library sounds even better.

Anna Steele was born in 1842, one of 12 children born to William and Roxanna Steele. After William Steele died in 1848, Roxanna married John A. Ray.

Nineteen years old when the Battle of Wilson’s Creek took place near her home on Aug. 10, 1861, Steele hid in the family’s cellar during the fighting and helped tend to the wounded after her house was used as a Southern field hospital.

Steele died in 1862 and is buried in Lindsey Cemetery in Republic, Missouri.

Thanks to a generous $30,000 grant from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4593 to the Springfield-Greene County Library Foundation, the Community Fridge at the Republic Branch Library will continue providing fresh, locally grown produce to Republic-area residents.

This support builds on the success of the Library District's Community Fridge program, which has distributed more than eight tons of fresh produce to nearly 5,000 community members since 2023.

The Fair Grove Branch received a thoughtful gift from patron regulars the Field family. 💐
