Today, Missouri State University’s football team plays in Plaster Stadium — but it wasn’t always known by that name.

The story of the venue stretches back to a 1940 WPA-funded project that gave the team its first real stadium. In 1970, it was named Briggs Stadium in honor of Arthur Briggs, the visionary coach who is credited with single-handedly establishing the university’s athletics department.

Over the decades, the stadium received extensive renovations, a controversial name change, and even a visit from one of the university’s most famous alums, John Goodman.
