🇮🇹⚛️ ITALY TAKES A STEP TOWARD A RETURN TO NUCLEAR ENERGY

On September 23, 2026, the Italian Senate gave final approval to legislation paving the way for Italy’s return to nuclear power.

The measure, approved 81–51 with 7 abstentions, delegates authority to the Italian Government to establish a comprehensive framework for sustainable nuclear energy, including the development and regulation of new nuclear facilities, advanced and modular reactor technologies, nuclear safety, radioactive waste management, research, and training.

Italy shut down its nuclear power program following the 1987 referendum, with the last operating reactors subsequently ceasing production. The new legislation represents the most significant step toward restarting nuclear power in Italy in decades.

The government has presented nuclear energy as part of a broader strategy involving energy security, decarbonization, technological innovation, and greater energy independence, alongside renewable sources.

The legislation does not mean that new reactors will begin operating immediately. It establishes the legal framework for the government to develop a national program and regulations governing future nuclear projects.

Today, September 23, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, the beloved Capuchin friar and priest whose life was marked by extraordinary devotion to Jesus Christ, the Holy Eucharist, and the Cross.

Born Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy, Padre Pio received the sacred stigmata and bore the wounds of Christ with profound humility. He spent countless hours celebrating Mass and hearing confessions, offering his suffering and prayers for the salvation of souls.

His entire priesthood was centered on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the forgiveness of sins, prayer, and a deep love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

He is also the patron of our beloved Sons of Italy Lodge, who has guided us faithfully these past three years, and whom we honor with a procession. He is a saint that bridges the past with the present, one who unites Italians from all regions of the country. That's why we chose him.

May the example of St. Padre Pio inspire us to deepen our own faith, seek God's mercy, receive the Sacraments worthily, and remain steadfast in prayer.
