This made us smile.
During a break, one of our teachers was playing “Double Double This This, Double Double That That” with a few students, and we immediately thought about how kids have been doing hand-clapping games like this forever.
And they are doing more than just having fun.
Keeping a rhythm, remembering a pattern, coordinating both hands, crossing the midline, sequencing movements, and paying attention to a partner. There is a lot happening in one simple little game. Those foundational motor skills support so many of the skills students use for reading, writing, attention, and learning.
Kids don’t always get as many natural opportunities for this kind of movement and motor play anymore, so we love seeing some of these old-school favorites pop up during break time.
Sometimes the old-school stuff is pretty great.

Three of our high school students chose to spend part of their recess helping today.
To be completely fair, they were also pretty excited about an excuse to get out of the heat.
First & Calvary, the church EnCompass calls home, is hosting an event this weekend, which meant a whole lot of chairs needed to be set up. Our students saw an opportunity to help and jumped in alongside the custodial team.
With a few extra sets of hands, a job that would have taken two people quite a while was finished in about 15 minutes.
We are always proud of our students for what they are learning academically, but moments like this matter just as much.
Learning to notice what needs to be done. Learning to step in. Learning that your time and effort can make someone else’s load a little lighter. Learning that being part of a community means contributing to it.
We want our Wayfinders to know they are not just students in a school. They are valuable members of a community, and they have something meaningful to offer.
Today, that looked like a lot of chairs and a few willing hands.

At EnCompass, we believe students should have opportunities to move their bodies throughout the school day. Movement can help students regulate, refocus, and come back ready to learn.
Most adults aren’t expected to sit perfectly still at a desk for eight hours straight, and we don’t think kids should be either. Giving students appropriate ways to move helps them learn what their bodies need and build healthy habits they can carry with them beyond the classroom.
Sometimes a few minutes of movement and a whole lot of giggles are exactly what helps students get ready for what comes next.

One of our favorite Friday traditions is the Springfield-Greene County Library District!
Each week, our students get to explore new books, request titles based on their interests, and discover new topics they want to learn more about.
It is the best watching kids develop a love of reading when they find something that genuinely interests them. Sometimes all it takes is the right book, the right topic, or the chance to follow their own curiosity.
We are so thankful for our friends at the library and for the way they help our Wayfinders stay curious, keep exploring, and find joy in reading.
Our Wayfinders were finding their rhythm this week with Mrs. Morgan from the Center for Music Therapy and Wellness, LLC!
Using egg shakers, students practiced rhythm, following directions, listening for cues, and even stopping on a dime when asked. That last part didn’t make the video because our videographer, AKA the Superintendent, thought she was recording and absolutely was not. 😂
What looks like a simple music activity is actually building so much: regulation, attention, body control, connection, and confidence.
Mrs. Morgan does amazing things with our students, and we are so grateful to have her walking alongside our Wayfinders each week through music.
This is the EA Way: connection, high expectations, and meaningful opportunities to learn all along the journey.

Still taking this one in.
Our ribbon cutting was packed with so many people who have been part of the EnCompass Academy story that we couldn’t even fit everyone in the photo. What a gift.
We started this school in the middle of a pandemic with a vision, a lot of determination, and a team willing to do hard things. To now be standing in this beautiful new space surrounded by families, friends, founders, donors, community members, and our friends at First & Calvary was incredibly humbling.
So grateful to the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce for helping us celebrate this milestone, and even more grateful for every person who helped us get here.

At EnCompass Academy, we prioritize creating experts.
This week, our teachers have spent the majority of their time learning, practicing, reflecting and growing together, with much of that training led by our own administrative team.
And this is only some of it. This week alone we completed 40 hours of training!

We invest heavily in training because our students deserve highly skilled adults who understand both how children learn and how relationships, regulation and connection impact that learning.
But expertise is more than knowing strategies.
We believe self-awareness may be one of the most important skills an educator can develop. Knowing yourself, understanding your strengths, recognizing your impact and staying curious about how you show up for others are all part of The EA Way.
We are incredibly proud of this team, their passion for learning and the work they continue to put into becoming experts for the students and families they serve.
We also ask for your patience and understanding as we have been booked solid with moving and training. We are working to get back with everyone as soon as possible and appreciate your patience as we navigate this busy season.

Tomorrow is the day!
Join us Tuesday, August 25 at 4:00 p.m. as we celebrate EnCompass Academy’s new home with our Chamber Ribbon Cutting and Open House at 820 E. Cherry St.
Everyone is welcome-families, friends, community partners, donors, local businesses, supporters, and anyone who wants to come celebrate with us. Several of our community partners will also be there sharing more about their nonprofits and the work they are doing in our community.
We are expecting a large crowd, so we recommend arriving a little early to give yourself time to park and get settled. Parking is available in the church’s main lot and in the east-side lot off John Q. Hammons Parkway, past the white gates.
The ribbon cutting happens right at 4:00, and you don’t want to miss it.
We can’t wait to celebrate this next chapter with our community.
