“A Hero’s Welcome”
By Robert Longley
“Time to come home dear brother
Your tour of duty through
You’ve given as much as anyone
Could be expected to do
Just a few steps further
The smoke will start to clear
Others here will guide you
You have no need to fear
You have not failed your brothers
You clearly gave it all
And through your selfless actions
Others will hear the call
So take your place of honor
Among those who have gone before
And know you will be remembered
For now and evermore”

Today, 10 firefighters were forced into 12-hour overtime assignments!
This means:
-1/3 of the of the Firefighters who worked their shift yesterday were forced to work again today.
-3 firefighters are now working their second consecutive forced tour.
-Another 3 firefighters stepped up voluntarily to help cover staffing shortages.
That’s the current problem. Kicking the Can and the City continuing to treat overtime as the answer to covering shifts.
Heres the answer. We need the city to hire more firefighters. We need our authorized strength to increase. There are individuals who have taken the tests and signed up to be considered. It’s time to fill the seats the right way and for the City to hire more firefighters.

This week we have 4 members present at meetings with State Level organizations working for the better future of Firefighters and Union Organization all across Ohio.
Tonight, our Union President spoke again at the city commission meeting, asking for action on the long standing staffing issue within Springfield Ohio when it comes to Public Safety. Over-Reliance on overtime and the bare minimum and quite frankly understaffed Public Safety is not the solution.
We’ve had conversations, we are ready to continue working towards results. We’re ready to work together and see action, that leads to real and sustainable results.

This afternoon we were fortunate to be able to celebrate the efforts of our Springfield Professional Firefighters.
6 of our members were awarded the Fire Service Valor Award. As was mentioned in the program their exceptional bravery, action and commitment to life saving efforts in the face of danger is truly impressive and we could not be more proud of their hard work.
The Springfield Fire Rescue Division was recognized as a whole for its efforts as Ohio Fire Department of the Year.
We are proud of the work and efforts of all of our members day in and day out continuing to serve the people and the city of Springfield proudly.
We also want to thank the community for its ongoing support especially in these trying times where we do our best to advocate for staff, equipment and the resources we need in order to safely care for our city.
