That split may look like “just a crack,” but once wood starts breaking apart like this, the bigger question is how far the deterioration extends.
Before choosing epoxy, filler, or replacement, you need to check the damaged area for rot depth, moisture, nearby damage, and whether the log is carrying a structural load.

Restoration is scheduled for spring, but storms are hitting now?
If you have exposed logs, deteriorated finish, or known rot that cannot be permanently repaired until better weather arrives, the goal for now is simple: reduce additional moisture exposure without trapping moisture against the wood.
A temporary tarp can help when installed more like a rain shield than plastic wrap. Secure it above the affected area, let it shed water away from the wall, and leave an air gap behind and below it so the logs can keep drying.
This is temporary protection — not a repair. If water is actively leaking into the home, there's significant structural rot, movement, or a safety concern, waiting until spring may not be appropriate.
But for areas already scheduled for restoration, keeping repeated rain and snow off the exposed wood can help protect the home until permanent repairs are complete.
Protect it now. Restore it properly when the weather allows.

The Puxico Public Library needed more than a cosmetic refresh. Deteriorated areas and failing materials were addressed before the log walls were carefully prepared and rechinked—helping preserve the building’s distinctive character for years to come.
Please note: Log Masters Restorations’ scope focused on the log walls and chinking. Visible windows, trim, doors, roofing, and other non-log surfaces were not included in this phase of the restoration.

Should every check in a log home be caulked? No. A check is a natural split in a log, and many do not require sealant. Upward-facing checks approximately ¼ inch or wider that can collect water should be evaluated for proper sealing.
In this step-by-step demonstration, Nick explains how professionals:
• Determine whether a log check should be caulked
• Prepare and tape the surrounding wood
• Select and install the correct backer rod
• Create two-point adhesion for flexible movement
• Apply and tool the caulk for a clean, natural-looking finish
• Remove the tape before the caulk skins over
Backer rod controls the depth of the caulk and prevents it from bonding to the bottom of the check. This allows the sealant to stretch and compress as the logs naturally expand and contract.
