Niles Gene LaValley

HAWLEY — Niles Gene LaValley of Hawley passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Baystate Franklin County Medical Center at the age of 39. The cause has not yet been determined.

Born on Oct. 5, 1986 in Greenfield, Niles lived a life defined by service, courage, laughter, and an extraordinary capacity to love others. Although his time here was far too short, the impact he made on his family, friends, coworkers, and community will be felt for generations.

Niles dedicated his life to helping others. He proudly served as a firefighter/paramedic with the Westfield Fire Department, Fire Chief of the Russell Fire Department, and as a paramedic for several ambulance services throughout western Massachusetts, including AMR Ambulance of Holyoke, RAM Ambulance of West Springfield, and ACTION Ambulance of Pittsfield.

He also served as President of Westfield Firefighters Local 1111, always advocating for those beside him. Fellow firefighters often described him as a "bull" of a firefighter — fearless, dependable, and exactly the person you wanted by your side when everything was on the line. He was also known as an incredible and knowledgeable paramedic, never afraid to do what was right.

Yet those who knew Niles best would tell you his greatest strength wasn't his courage, it was his heart. He was endlessly generous, fiercely loyal, wonderfully goofy, and always ready to make someone laugh. He had an unforgettable presence. Again and again, those who reached out after his passing shared the same sentiment: Niles was the kind of person who changed lives simply by being himself.

Niles was a devoted husband and father. He often called his wife, Jennifer, the love of his life and best friend, and his son, Theo, the greatest gift. Theo lit up the moment he saw his Dad, calling out, "DaDa!" before running into his arms. Niles treasured tractor rides with Theo, taking him swimming, letting him "help" fix things in the garage, and dreamed of the day they would spend hours fishing together. He embraced fatherhood with the same wholehearted love that he gave to everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jennifer Jason; his son, Theo LaValley; his loving mother, Arlene LaValley; his sister, Eastyn LaValley; and his uncle, Dana Coya, who was raised alongside Niles. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gene LaValley; his brother, Tanner LaValley; and his uncle, Raymond Howell, who lived with the family.

Like many first responders, Niles quietly carried burdens and trauma that were often unseen and he had been working hard toward healing.

His story reminds us that even those who spend their lives rescuing and serving others sometimes need help themselves.

As we remember him, may we all take to heart the lessons he strove to live by: reach out when you're struggling, do not fear talking, and know that asking for help is a sign of strength.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 1-5 p.m. at Stanley Park, 400 Western Avenue, Westfield at the Pavilion Annex behind the rose garden.

Niles will be remembered for the lives he saved, the lives he fought for, the laughter he shared, the kindness he gave so freely, and the immense love he had for his family. His legacy lives on in every person who was fortunate enough to know him.

Today, we commemorate K-9 Frankie who was killed in the line of duty on this day in 2022 at the age of 10 after being shot by a barricaded suspect while Troopers were attempting to serve a warrant. Frankie had served with the Massachusetts State Police for nine years and was awarded the Medal of Valor with his handler in 2017. We will remember and honor him.

🚨 END OF AN ERA: The Last Of The Iconic Cruisers Has Left the Building 🚨
Today, we officially said goodbye to a legend. Our very last Ford Crown Victoria has officially ridden off into the sunset (well, it was traded in, but "sunset" sounds more poetic).
For our "more experienced" officers, this is a tough one. This car represents the glory days of our early days on patrol—complete with "fun" winter driving in the snow, actually backing up using our mirrors, and the occasional rear-wheel-drive fishtail (by mistake, of course... clear driver error due to raw power).
To the young officers who only know touchscreens and backup cameras: you will never understand the pure joy of a V8 engine that sounded like a spaceship but handled like a pontoon boat.
She spent her final years doing top-secret work for our Detective Bureau. She was always full of surprises—like the time she casually dropped her fuel tank right at the DPW fuel pump. Honestly, very environmentally conscious and considerate of her to do it there rather than in the middle of a busy roadway!
Though she hasn’t stretched her legs in a few years, seeing her leave the lot brings a tear to our veteran officers' eyes (or maybe that’s just the exhaust fumes).
To fill her massive shoes, our detectives are getting a brand new Chevy Equinox. We are sure the team will look incredibly intimidating pulling up to a crime scene in a vehicle best known for picking up kids from soccer practice.⚽🛒
Thank you for your service, old girl. Enjoy retirement. May your future hold fewer potholes and a driver who doesn't spill coffee on the dashboard. ☕🚔

Springfield Police Department Promotes Two Captains & Two Lieutenants

Springfield, Mass. --- On Friday July 17th, on behalf of the Springfield Police Department, Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence E. Akers along with Mayor Domenic J. Sarno held a promotional pinning ceremony for the Department’s two newest Captains and two newest Lieutenants inside Springfield City Hall.

Springfield Police Superintendent Akers promoted Captain Eleni Barbieri, Captain Derek Cook, Lieutenant Jacob Strange and Lieutenant Jason Sleeper on June 28th.

Superintendent Akers stated, “I’d like to congratulate these four sworn officers for continuing to rise in the Springfield Police Department Supervisory ranks. Getting to this point in your career is not easy and should not be taken for granted. Each of these leaders have overcome challenges and obstacles whether it be professionally or personally and continue to serve the citizens of Springfield and their fellow officers with dignity, respect and compassion. I want to thank all of you for your commitment to our department and your families for the support they provide you.”

Mayor Sarno states, “I am proud to congratulate our brave and dedicated Springfield Police Officers who are being promoted to Sergeant. Thank you to each of you and your families for continuing to step up to serve and protect all of our residents and business community with courage, professionalism, honor and integrity. Captain Eleni Barbieri

Captain Eleni Barbieri began her public service career in 2003 as a Victim Witness Advocate with the Hampden District Attorney’s Office. After serving with the Hampden Sheriff’s Department, she joined the Springfield Police Department in 2007 and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2017 and Lieutenant in 2023.

A graduate of The MacDuffie School in Springfield, Captain Barbieri holds a master’s degrees in legal studies and Online Education and Curriculum Development. She is also a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), demonstrating her commitment to public safety and community response.

While serving in a variety of roles, Captain Barbieri has spent approximately 15 years of her career within the Springfield Police Department’s Training Division, where she continues to play an instrumental role in developing, coordinating and delivering recruit and in-service training programs. During her tenure, she has helped prepare hundreds of officers to serve in Springfield and neighboring communities during 14 recruit classes.

Barbieri is a proud recipient of the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award and serves nationally as an instructor for FBI-LEEDA. She also serves as an Axon Master TASER instructor, MPTC instructor, teaching Instructor Development and Use of Force programs throughout the Commonwealth. Captain Barbieri is also an adjunct professor at Springfield College teaching criminal justice and leadership courses.

Throughout her career, Captain Barbieri has been passionate about empowering women to lead with confidence, courage and authenticity. She is a member of the Springfield Police Honor Guard and was part of the second all-female honor guard at Fenway Park in 2024.

Captain Barbieri remains committed to serving the citizens of Springfield, strengthening the Springfield Police Department, advancing the profession and leaving a legacy of leadership that empowers others to reach their fullest potential. While gratified by her professional accomplishments, she considers her greatest achievement to be her family whose love and support have been the foundation of her success.

Captain Derek Cook

Captain Derek Cook joined the Springfield Police Department in 1992. After spending 27 years in the Uniform Division, Cook was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2019 and Lieutenant in 2022. As a Supervisor, Cook has been tasked to lead the C3 Mason Square Unit and Traffic Bureau and is currently assigned to the Uniform Division as the Captain of Squad “A”. He is also a member of the Crisis Negotiation Team.

The High School of Commerce graduate received a bachelor’s and master’s Degree from Curry College in Criminal Justice.

Captain Cook has received multiple departmental Commendations including for “Behind the Walls” a program that was utilized in the Springfield Public Schools with more than 2000 students taking part.

Captain Cook thanks his family and friends who have kept him grounded and provided support throughout his career. He is thankful and humbled to be in this position.

Lieutenant Jacob Strange

Lieutenant Jacob Strange began his law enforcement career in 2008 with the Belchertown Police Department, before transferring to the Springfield Police Department in 2015. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2020. Before beginning his career, Strange served as a Police Cadet at UMass Amherst gaining valuable early experience that helped shape his career.

A dedicated officer, trainer and leader, Strange has prioritized education and professional development. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Worcester State University and a master’s degree in criminal justice from American International College.

Strange has spent much of his Springfield Police career in the Academy, assigned as both a patrolman and supervisor. He is a certified MPTC instructor in numerous disciplines, a lead instructor in Use of Force and Defensive Tactics and an Axon Master Taser Instructor. He has assisted in the training of nine different Springfield Police Academy recruit classes guiding hundreds of officers.

Lieutenant Strange would like to thank his wife, Cheri, for her unwavering support and motivating him to keep pushing himself professionally and personally as well as his father, a retired Warden from the Connecticut Department of Correction for teaching him the true meaning of leadership and the importance of teaching everyone with respect. Outside of the department, Strange coaches and supports his sons in their sports.

Lieutenant Jason Sleeper

Lieutenant Jason Sleeper has served the city of Springfield for more than 29 years as a Police Officer. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2023 where he served in the Uniform Division and Traffic Bureau, he is currently a Lieutenant in the Uniform Division.

Born and raised in Springfield, Sleeper is a 1992 graduate of Central High School. During his nearly three decades protecting our community Sleeper has been in the Uniform Division, Student Support Unit, and Traffic Bureau. Sleeper also served our country in the Army National Guard.

The Wilbraham Police Department proudly congratulates Sergeant Michael Cygan on his retirement after 21½ years of dedicated service to the Town of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, USA.

Michael joined the Wilbraham Police Department in 2005, bringing with him nearly a decade of prior law enforcement experience. Before beginning his career, he studied Criminal Justice and Fisheries & Wildlife Law Enforcement at Franklin Pierce University, UMass Amherst, and Hesser College. He is also a graduate of the 11th MPOC at the Mptc Regional Police Academy-Boylston.

Over the past 21½ years, Michael has worn many hats within the department. He has served as a Patrol Officer, Court Officer/Investigator, R.A.D. Women's Self-Defense Instructor, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) member, Field Training Officer (FTO), Drug Abuse Response Team officer (DART), Acting Sergeant, and ultimately Sergeant after his promotion in February 2024.

Beyond his official duties, Michael has been a tireless advocate for his fellow officers. He served as President of the The New England PBA, Inc. Local 120 for 11 years, President of the Wilbraham Police Relief Association, a representative for the Massachusetts Police Association, and organizer of the now-annual WPRA Golf Tournament. His leadership, dedication, and willingness to serve extended far beyond his daily responsibilities.

While careers are often measured in years, Michael's legacy will be measured by the people he mentored, the officers he supported, and the countless members of the community whose lives he touched along the way.

Michael, thank you for your unwavering commitment to the Town of Wilbraham, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, your fellow officers, and the law enforcement profession. Your service has made a lasting difference, and your presence will be missed.

Congratulations on a well-earned retirement. May this next chapter be filled with family, friends, new adventures, great rounds of golf, successful hunting and fishing trips, and plenty of time around the smoker perfecting your next masterpiece. You have certainly earned it.
