“Remember that time when you were a child and you woke up in the morning and smiled. It’s time, it’s time, it’s time to feel like that again.”

TAKE A GIANT STEP –TRIBUTE TO TAJ MAHAL
Worthington Street, Downtown Springfield, MA

This mural by Common Wealth Murals is a vibrant tribute to Taj Mahal and his roots in Springfield. Taj Mahal, the legendary blues musician, has won five Grammy Awards over his extensive career out of numerous nominations. He has also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy and was officially declared the “Official Blues Musician” of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

At the center is a portrait of Taj Mahal surrounded by five young musicians from Springfield, each playing an instrument and representing the next generation of artists carrying the city’s musical legacy forward. Running through the mural is a lyric from his song Take a Giant Step.

The mural was painted by Common Wealth Murals, with the help of more than 75 volunteers from MassMutual.

🚧 Traffic Advisory: State Street Construction Begins July 27 🚧

Starting Monday, July 27, the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission will begin an important sewer pipe improvement project on State Street between Main Street and Dwight Street.

🗓️ Project Timeline: Late July through early September (approximately 6 weeks)
🕖 Construction Hours: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM

What to expect:
🚗 State Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction throughout the project.
👮 Traffic will be managed with police details, signage, and barriers, so please allow extra travel time if you're heading downtown.

These repairs are part of critical infrastructure upgrades to the downtown sewer system. Some of the sewer pipes in this area date back to 1883, and these improvements will help ensure a more reliable and resilient system for years to come.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as this important work is completed.
