Hello Fall!!! 🍂
Springfield: City of Firsts… including the smartphone? 📱👀
Okay, hear us out.
In 1937, artist Umberto Romano painted Mr. Pynchon and the Settling of Springfield, depicting William Pynchon’s arrival and interactions with Indigenous people in 17th-century Springfield.
Seems normal enough… until you look closely.
One figure appears to be holding something that looks VERY suspiciously like a modern-day iPhone. 📱
A smartphone. In a painting from 1937. About Springfield in the 1600s.
So naturally, the internet has questions. Time traveler? Springfield secretly invented the iPhone? Just an oddly shaped object that looks way more familiar to modern eyes than Romano could have anticipated?
We’ll let you decide. 👀
But for a city known as the City of Firsts, having its own time-travel conspiracy feels extremely on brand.
Just another Springfield first… maybe. 😂

We’re launching a new Springfield Downtown storytelling series, What’s Your First?, and we’re looking for people who have a story to tell.
