Natalie Kendrick, PA-C graduated from our program in 2014 and works in the ED, serving the Monett community. Her keen critical thinking skills were recently celebrated by the hospital and their stroke care.

𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗴𝗼. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲.

When a 36-year-old man walked into the Cox Monett Emergency Department with vertigo and symptoms that were difficult to put into words, Natalie Kendrick, PA, knew something wasn't right.

The symptoms could have been easy to dismiss. Instead, Natalie trusted her instincts and ordered a CT scan.

The results revealed large-volume, bilateral cerebellar infarcts, a posterior circulation stroke that can be especially difficult to recognize and is frequently missed.

Because Natalie kept looking for an answer, he received the care he needed. He's now expected to recover.

As a Level III Stroke Center, Cox Monett is equipped to quickly recognize and respond when every minute matters. But sometimes, it starts with a provider who listens closely, trusts their instincts, and keeps looking for answers.

A physician colleague put it best:

"I'm proud of the care she put into taking care of this patient. It may end up saving his life."

That's more than a great catch. That's what happens when a provider listens closely, trusts their instincts, and refuses to stop looking for answers.

Last night, our PA students participated in a Poverty Simulation Interprofessional Event alongside students from other graduate programs at Missouri State University.

Throughout the simulation, we were placed into different “families” and challenged to navigate a series of real-life situations while trying to make ends meet each week. The experience provided a glimpse into some of the financial, social, and systemic barriers that can impact individuals and families experiencing poverty.

The simulation was a powerful reminder that our patients’ health is influenced by much more than what happens inside the exam room. Understanding the circumstances our patients face can help us approach care with greater empathy, awareness, and compassion.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside students from across disciplines and to reflect on how we can better serve our future patients and communities. 🤍
