Fire Sweep Simmental Ranch

THIS is why I keep pushing our calving dates back. Missouri gets some pretty hot summers over the next 60 days. Friday, a cool front came through and it didn't get over the 70's, then this heat wave hit and it's been miserable the last 2 days. Actual temps above 100, and factor in the humidity and you can't stand it being outside. I'm pretty sure I know who slipped this calf, since she was off by herself and bagged up. She would be due 9/10, and the calf was a heifer sired by Money Maker. Here's where genetics are so important! Her dam, an embryo first calf heifer, came home empty last fall (we put our breds on another farm 3 miles away, and only check them once weekly over the summer). We had 4 out of about 40 come home empty... unheard of for us. We don't use a bull (or didn't), so it was a hard hit. We learned about the new tick disease, Theileria, and actually had a positive tested cow, so we checked it off to that. Both this heifer and her dam have hair they don't shed. This heifer will not get a second chance like her dam... she's going in the freezer or the stockyard as soon as I'm sure she's the guilty one who lost her calf. Hair that don't shed and MO humid summers don't work well together.

Such a great feeling, even though we are weeks behind our normal 1st cutting time frame. Hay will be mature and lower quality, but some hay is better than no hay! The abundant rain we had in May is appreciated!

Been awhile since we posted an update. Things are bumping right along on the farm. We started weaning our October calves. Grass looks good, we are trying to get a dry window to cut for hay. God is good!

Grass is good... except to much Kentucky blue in this field. Weaned our September calves a few weeks ago, so cows look pretty good condition wise.
