The proposed Chapter 94 updates were developed through extensive public outreach and informed by feedback from residents, private haulers and other community stakeholders. The feedback received highlighted several recurring themes.

Residents expressed strong interest in improved recycling access, more consistent service standards, expanded bulky item and yard waste options, neighborhood cleanliness, and a less fragmented residential collection system.

Haulers generally supported clearer expectations and improved code clarity, while also emphasizing the need for operational flexibility.

We are seeking privater partners to develop Renewable Natural Gas facilities at the Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill and the Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant tohelp turn gas generated from waste at City facilities today into energy for tomorrow. 🚛 ♻️⚡

By capturing biogas that's already produced at these facilities and upgrading it into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas, Springfield can reduce emissions, expand renewable energy production and create long-term community benefits, while minimizing financial risk to taxpayers through a public-private partnership.

Since March, Springfield's dedicated litter collection program has made a measurable impact on some of the city's busiest corridors, gateways and expressways.

The Environmental Services Clean Team was created through the Clean Green Waste Impact Initiative, which dedicates a portion of Noble Hill Landfill tipping fees to year-round litter collection. The program was designed to provide consistent, measurable cleanup efforts while complementing existing community cleanup initiatives.

Our four-person litter crew focuses on areas where litter accumulates most, using field data to refine routes and direct resources where they're needed most.

While not every issue reached consensus, the input helped shape a balanced package of proposed changes designed to improve service consistency, expand recycling opportunities and better serve our community.

‼️ The Springfield Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill is closed today (Monday, July 20) due to a material fire.

🔥 Area fire departments are on site, the fire is contained and no injuries have been reported.

⚠️ This incident is an important reminder that prohibited materials, including batteries, chemicals, flammable materials and other hazardous waste, should never be disposed of at the landfill. These items can create serious fire and safety hazards when they enter the waste stream.

🗑️ Landfill customers are encouraged to review usage guidelines and a list of what is and is not accepted at the landfill at springfieldmo.gov/landfill.

🪄Residents can also use the City’s Waste Wizard online search tool at springfieldmo.gov/wastewizard to determine how materials should be properly disposed of in the community.

🦺 The landfill is expected to reopen during regular operating hours (7 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Tuesday, July 21. If the closure needs to be extended, updates will be posted here. Please check back for updates before planning your trip to the landfill.

🇺🇸 Holiday Closure Notice 🇺🇸

In observance of Independence Day, our Landfill, Yard Waste Recycling Center, and Recycling Facilities will be closed on Saturday, July 4.

Regular operating hours will resume on Monday for the Landfill and Tuesday for the Recycling and Yardwaste Recycling Centers.
