The debate is about more than fuel. Supporters of greater domestic production point to energy security, supply resilience and jobs, while others argue that investment should increasingly focus on renewable and lower-carbon energy as the UK moves towards its longer-term climate goals.

🇬🇧 Should every village in the UK have a reliable daily bus service? 🚌

For people living in rural communities, local buses can be an important connection to shops, healthcare, education, work and nearby towns. For people without access to a car, the availability and reliability of public transport can make a significant difference to everyday life.

In England, the government is providing more than £1 billion a year for bus services outside London, with local transport authorities given flexibility to use funding for measures such as new routes, lower fares, bus improvements and better infrastructure. Funding allocations also take rurality into account.

At the same time, councils have to consider local demand, costs and how services should be designed. Rural areas can also use demand-responsive transport, where services are adapted around local needs rather than following a fixed timetable.

So what should the future look like?

Public toilets can be an important part of town-centre life, particularly for older people, families with young children, disabled people and visitors. But providing and maintaining them also creates ongoing costs for local councils.

In England, councils generally do not have a legal duty to provide public toilets, meaning provision can vary between areas. Recent examples show different approaches: Cambridge provides free council-run toilets at most locations, while one high-footfall facility charges £1 to help cover cleaning and maintenance costs.

🇬🇧 Should every council keep weekly household bin collections? 🗑️

Bin collection schedules can vary between councils, and the question of how often household waste should be collected continues to be debated.

Since 31 March 2026, England’s Simpler Recycling rules have required councils to provide weekly food-waste collections for households, while councils still have flexibility over the frequency and method used for residual (non-recyclable) waste and dry recycling.

Supporters of more frequent household collections may point to convenience, hygiene and reducing the amount of waste stored at home. Others may argue that less frequent residual-waste collections can encourage recycling and help councils manage collection costs and resources.

🇬🇧 Should the St George’s Flag fly proudly across England? 🏴

The St George’s Cross is officially recognised as the national flag of England. Government guidance also lists 23 April — St George’s Day as a designated day for the Union Flag to be flown on UK government buildings.

Across England, councils have different approaches to displaying the St George’s flag. Some choose to fly it on St George’s Day, while others have adopted policies allowing it to be displayed more regularly.

For some people, the flag represents English history, heritage and national identity. Others may prefer public buildings and spaces to display a range of symbols reflecting the communities they serve.

🇬🇧 Should pensioners get free dental care? 🦷

Dental care can become an important part of maintaining health and quality of life as people get older. But whether all pensioners should receive free NHS dental treatment is a wider question about access, affordability and how NHS resources should be allocated.

In England, free NHS dental treatment is not automatically available simply because someone is a pensioner. Certain groups can qualify, including people receiving the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit, while other exemptions also apply.

So should free dental care be extended to all pensioners, regardless of income? Or should support continue to be targeted at people who meet specific eligibility criteria?

🇬🇧 Should every town keep a local Post Office? 📮

Local Post Offices continue to play an important role in many UK communities, providing postal services, cash and banking access, and other essential services. The government has confirmed that the Post Office network will maintain a minimum of 11,500 branches, while at least half of the network is expected to be full-time and full-service.

But as shopping, banking and everyday services increasingly move online, questions remain about what role local Post Offices should have in the future.

For some communities, having a nearby branch can be particularly important for people who prefer face-to-face services. Others may favour more modern and digital ways of accessing services.
