You have sat in that room on the other side of this __silence a funeral reception folding chairs a casserole going cold under its foil and somebody by the coffee urn murmuring that it has been long enough that he should be doing better that she shouldn't be laughing Somebody with a paper plate in one hand deciding how a person in the worst year of their life is supposed to look Everyone carries a stopwatch for other people's grief 6 months is too soon to move 3 years is too long to still be a story 5 months into a marriage is either love or a headline depending on who is holding the phone Nobody agrees on the number Nobody ever has There is a picture in most heads of how the bereaved are supposed to live Same house same routine same quiet A man who changes cities runs through a park meets someone marries stands outside that picture and the picture has no frame for a second chapter The jury never got a picture

here's the question: Was this a moment of compassion that crossed a line or is this exactly why those rules have no exceptions Now a lot of people hear this and say "It's food It's a plate of food What's the big deal?" The sheriff's office answered that directly They say there are strict rules on contraband including food because weapons or other harmful materials can be hidden inside food And the sheriff says anyone caught bringing contraband into that facility whether they're an inmate an employee or an officer will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law And this isn't the first time that jail has been in the news for this According to WS the facility has had other contraband cases recently including a food services employee arrested in June of twenty 25 and a corrections officer arrested on video in March of this year Now let's step back and talk about why a rule like this exists and this part is my take not part of the case In a jail the rule isn't really about the plate of food it's about the precedent Once one exception gets made it gets a lot harder to say no to the next one Today it's a meal but a favor can turn into an expectation and an expectation can turn into leverage And at some point somebody's asking for something a whole lot more dangerous than dinner I'm not saying that's what happened here Nobody has said that and we don't know her reasons but that's why the rule leaves no wiggle room And to be fair we don't know why she did it Maybe it was kindness maybe it was something else She's not a public figure She's an everyday person whose case ended up in front of a whole lot of people Whatever the court decides that's a heavy thing to have happen to you in the space of one week So here's the question: Was this a moment of compassion that crossed a line or is this exactly why those rules have no exceptions Let me know what you think in the comments and stay with us for more
