One of the most common questions we hear is: "Are compounded medications FDA approved?"

The short answer is no.

The FDA approves commercially manufactured medications that are produced in large quantities for the general public.

Compounded medications are different.
They are prepared by a licensed pharmacy for an individual patient based on a provider's prescription. Because they are customized, they do not go through the FDA approval process used for mass-manufactured drugs.

That does not mean they are unregulated.

Compounding pharmacies operate under strict state and federal regulations and follow quality and safety standards established for pharmacy practice.

Compounding exists because sometimes patients need something that simply isn't available in a commercially manufactured medication.
