The sweetest new face at Boyd has officially arrived. Welcome, Sweeney! 🐾 Read about Sweeney below⬇️

"Our classroom is getting a new “student”! Last year I applied for our classroom to get a professional therapy dog. This summer I was able to travel to Kansas to pick up our new furry friend. I spent a week learning about Sweeney and all the ways that she can help us this year.

Sweeney is a four year old golden retriever. She was born in Springfield, MO. From Springfield she traveled to Kansas and has been training ever since. Sweeney knows several commands and she has been practicing them all summer long.

Sweeney is very calm, she is a good listener and she loves to be petted. One of Sweeney’s jobs this year will be to help students regulate their emotions when they are experiencing big feelings. Students will be able to sit by Sweeney and pet her or share their feelings with her. Sweeney also loves to hear a good story. Students will be able to read to Sweeney during the school day.

Sweeney lives with Mrs. Owings and her family. When Sweeney is working she is wearing her blue vest. Unlike service dogs, Sweeney can be petted when she is working. She does need to be sitting or in the down position before students begin petting her. You should also know that Sweeney is quite the “talker”. She grunts and snorts all the time! This is just how she is. When she makes this noise she is not showing aggressive behavior. More than likely she wants you to pet her more. 🙂

Sweeney has a “safe spot” in our classroom should she need a break from students.

I am very excited to begin this journey of having a professional therapy dog in our classroom!
