This Day In Weather History June 28th
1931 – Monticello, Florida. The temperature reached 109°F, establishing Florida’s all-time state record at the time.
1988 – Jackson, Mississippi & Alpena, Michigan contrast
Jackson, MS: 105°F, tying a June record
Alpena, MI: 39°F, a record low for the date
A striking example of strong North–South temperature contrast across the U.S.
Flooding and Tropical Storm Impacts
1954 – Hurricane Alice (Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas)
A major rainfall event with up to 27 inches of rain.
Rio Grande at Laredo rose 12.6 feet above previous records
The U.S. Highway 90 bridge was submerged well below flood levels
This was one of the most extreme flooding events in South Texas history.
Severe Thunderstorms, Tornadoes, and Hail
1987 – Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, and Colorado storm outbreak
Widespread damaging winds and large hail across OH, IN, and MI
Four tornadoes in Michigan, including one near Clare with softball-sized hail. Colorado saw an unusual summer snow event: 6 inches on Mount Evans
1989 – Central & Southern High Plains severe weather, Colorado (Kit Carson): softball-sized hail, Phillips County, CO: widespread hail damage causing $10 million in crop losses. This was a significant hail-producing storm complex across the High Plains.
Heavy Rainfall Events
1988 – Springfield, Missouri
Thunderstorms dropped 3.62 inches of rain, setting a daily record.
