20 YEARS AGO TODAY… OCTOBER 5TH, 2006. 🕊️

I woke up that morning with a headache, never knowing I was about to experience something that would change my life forever.

I had just been released from prison and was out on parole. Before that, I had been incarcerated for a crime my cousin actually committed, but he accused me of doing it. I was eventually released from that case, but the betrayal of being blamed for something I didn’t do by my own family was heartbreaking.

While I was incarcerated, I lost my favorite aunt ,the mother of the same cousin who would later be behind the wheel of the car that almost took my life. Losing her while I was behind bars made that pain even heavier.

That night, my cousin got drunk. We argued, and the last thing he said to me was:

“MY MOMMA DEAD AND MY DADDY DEAD… I’M FINNA TAKE US TO GO SEE HER.”

Then he slammed the car into the highway wall going 85 MPH.

I was thrown from the car.

I woke up on Highway 70 screaming for help, covered in blood and barely conscious.

Broken ribs. Fractured collarbone. Shattered shoulder and arm. Eight blood clots in my head. A chipped bone in my neck. Paralyzed for almost six months.

The doctors told me I would never walk again.

But God had other plans.

20 YEARS LATER… LOOK AT ME. I’M STILL HERE. 🙏🏾

Still walking.
Still breathing.
Still growing.
Still blessed.

And after everything I’ve survived, I can honestly say my heart is still pure. ❤️

I forgave both of my cousins — the one I did time for and the one who almost took my life.

Not because I forgot. Not because what happened was okay.

I forgave because I refuse to let what people did to me change who I am.

God’s grace carried me. My ancestors protected me. And my story didn’t end on that highway.

Check on your loved ones. Mental health is real. You never know what someone is carrying behind the scenes.

And please, no matter who’s driving, WEAR YOUR SEATBELT. 🛑

Life can change in seconds.

20 years later, I’m still here. And I’ll never take that for granted.

Peace & Love. ❤️🙏🏾

Looking at a picture of me at 9, then seeing myself at 22, and now looking at the man I’m becoming in my late 30s… it made me really stop and look at my life.

I see that little boy from the streets of St. Louis who was trying to find his way without a father figure, without much guidance, and without really understanding what life was going to demand from him.

I’ve been hurt. I’ve made mistakes. I’ve been the victim, and I’ve been the suspect. I’ve carried things I didn’t always know how to process. There were times I was lost and didn’t know who I was supposed to become.

But when I look at myself now, I see growth that only life could teach me.

I’m more patient with myself. I understand that healing takes time. I’ve learned that forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting, and that strength isn’t always about being tough,it’s also about being honest enough to face yourself, take accountability, and choose to grow.

I’ve learned to protect my peace without losing my heart. To love people without losing myself. To acknowledge where I came from without allowing it to define where I’m going.

And becoming a father played a huge part in shaping the man I am today. Fatherhood gave me another reason to grow, to mature, to heal, and to become a better version of myself. It taught me that becoming the man I wanted to be wasn’t just about me anymore.

And honestly, I’m proud of that.

Because that little boy still lives inside of me. I just understand him better now. I have more compassion for the man I was, more gratitude for everything I survived, and more clarity about the man I’m still becoming.

I believe God and my ancestors carried me through moments I couldn’t carry myself. And through everything, I’m grateful that I never allowed my circumstances to completely change the love that was always inside of me.

I’m still evolving. Still healing. Still learning who I am.

And maybe that’s the most beautiful part of growing older, realizing that becoming yourself is a lifelong journey. 🙏🏽🧡
