RIP to Martha Lillard. Martha was the last polio patient using an iron lung. For those that don’t know Polio can attack the central nervous system causing paralysis. Sometimes this paralysis includes the muscles you need to breathe. This is where the iron lung comes in. The iron lung uses negative pressure to force inhalation and exhalation all while your head dangles outside like some weird magic trick that’s about to happen.
