The Department of Civil Engineering is proud to congratulate Dr. Tugce Baser on being awarded the Banpu Research Professorship in Sustainability.

Dr. Baser's work addresses critical challenges at the intersection of geotechnical engineering, climate resilience, and sustainable energy systems. Her research on geothermal technologies, permafrost degradation, freeze-thaw processes, and the thermal behavior of geomaterials is advancing scientific understanding while supporting the development of more sustainable and resilient infrastructure.

This honor reflects Dr. Baser's outstanding contributions to geotechnical and sustainable infrastructure engineering, as well as her commitment to mentoring students and advancing scholarship in the field. We are proud to have her as a member of our faculty and look forward to the continued impact of her work.

Meet Spencer McFarlane, a third-year civil engineering student and Cubs fan from the Chicago metropolitan area!

This summer, Spencer interned as a Project Management Intern at PREMIER Design + Build Group. During his internship, he supported bid comparisons, scheduling, project portfolio development, and budgeting efforts. He also contributed to the Chicago Metra's South Water Street development at Millennium Station. This opportunity provided valuable hands-on experience with site walks, communication with subcontractors and government agencies, management of unforeseen conditions, and contract review and interpretation.

Through this experience, Spencer gained firsthand insight into how concepts taught in the Construction and Project Management course are applied in real-world construction projects.

Beyond the classroom, Spencer is actively involved in extracurricular activities as a member of the Bare Naked Statues a ca****la group. Alongside several fellow civil engineering students, he performs at events across campus and throughout the university community.

Congratulations to the Class of 2029 for earning their hard hats by completing their semester-long Future Cities projects and presenting their work to the faculty. Our aspiring civil engineers will now wear their hard hats during hands-on learning, field trips, and extracurricular activities until their commencement in May 2029. We look forward to watching this cohort evolve from curious learners into confident leaders and engineers.

Congratulations to Melissa Rettig, P.E., RSP1 (SLU Civil, 2016) for being recognized as the 2026 Young Engineer of the Year by the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) St. Louis Chapter.

As a licensed Professional Transportation Engineer in the Greater St. Louis Area, Melissa has dedicated her career to taking projects from concept to completion. She is a specialist in bridging the gap between NEPA planning and final roadway design, ensuring our infrastructure is not only efficient but also environmentally compliant.

In addition to her technical work, Melissa remains extensively engaged with professional organizations and industry initiatives. She currently serves as the President of the ASCE St. Louis Section and is a past president of ASCE SLU. She continues to be a dedicated resource for SLU, serving as a mentor to our students. Congratulations on a very well-deserved recognition!

Congratulations to Edward Jost, a third-year civil engineering student, for being awarded a scholarship by the Concrete Council of St. Louis. Edward is a member of the Engineers without Borders (EWB) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapters at SLU. He also serves as a resident advisor (RA) for SLU Housing. Way to go, Edward!

We are proud of Class of 2026 and our Foundational Interdisciplinary Research Experience (FIRE) undergraduate researchers who reached a major milestone last week, presenting the culmination of a year of work on their capstone and research projects at the SSE Showcase.
