Three Steps Home
Mission: To provide compassionate, holistic care to the unhoused who need a safe place to heal. Three Steps Home was founded in 2001 as Bridge of Hope (BOH).
What started as providing basic services such as a place to come out of the inclement weather and rest, receive a hot meal, toiletries, shower, washer and dryer access, a clothing room, and literacy education has turned into providing medical respite care for the unhoused. In 2020, BOH underwent a massive leadership change from the founders to a new Executive and Board of Directors. Amid a global pandemic, the new leadership evaluated the programs and services to understand what was most impactful and essential in helping clients achieve health and economic stability. While our long-standing day shelter has provided short-term necessities and case management services, what our clients have asked for most is access to healthcare and connection to housing. We have changed our model to focus on medical respite in order to make the greatest long-term impact in the lives of our clients, reduce demand on local emergency departments, and reduce healthcare costs. With this, our name has changed to Three Steps Home.

When someone leaves the hospital with nowhere safe to recover, it takes more than one organization to get them there. Hospital discharge teams who make the referral. Funders who keep our beds open. Fellow nonprofits who help with housing. Neighbors who show up. For over 2 decades , Three Steps Home has been one part of that chain, and we're grateful to everyone who is part of it. Want to join them? Hospitals and organizations: reach us at [email protected]. Individuals: donate at threestepshome.org/donate or volunteer at threestepshome.org/volunteer.

Based on national outcomes for medical respite care, this model can mean 50% fewer hospital readmissions, 36% fewer ER visits, and over a million dollars saved from unnecessary inpatient stays every year. Twenty-five years of care, and the impact keeps growing. Here's to the next 25.

We couldn't do 25 years of this work without the partners who've stood beside us: hospitals, funders, fellow nonprofits, and neighbors who just believe in what we're building. Grateful doesn't quite cover it. More on our partners (and how you can join them) coming soon.
This year marks 25 years of Three Steps Home calling St. Louis home. To celebrate, we want to hear from you: what's one thing about our community that makes you proud to live here? Drop it in the comments. We'll be sharing our favorites all week.

This year alone, more than 170 volunteers have shown up to help launch our Medical Respite Care program: prepping rooms, welcoming clients, supporting our clinical team. Today we want to say something simple: thank you. If you've ever thought about volunteering with us, this is your sign.

Our Medical Respite Care program exists to close a gap that's been growing for years: people who leave the hospital medically stable but with nowhere safe to recover. The numbers are stark: 606 people referred for this kind of care in St. Louis last year, only 215 could be served. Twenty-five years in, closing that gap is still exactly why we do this work. Want to help us close it further? Donate, volunteer, or just share this post.

Twenty-five years ago, Three Steps Home opened its doors in The Ville with one belief: everyone deserves a safe place to heal. A lot has changed since then, including, this year, the launch of our new Medical Respite Care program. But the mission hasn't moved. This fall, we're marking 25 years with something big. Follow along and share with a friend who loves St. Louis, we're building something big and we want our community along for it.

Medical Respite Works.
"This place is the best thing that has happened to me."
That's what one of our clients told us after 30 days at Three Steps Home. A safe bed. Medical care. Help finding housing. Hope.
When someone leaves the hospital but has nowhere to recover, Three Steps Home steps in. We provide what recovery actually requires: safety, medical oversight, and someone believing in them.
30 days later, they're stable. They're housed. They're ready for what comes next.
This is possible because of partners, donors, and volunteers like you who believe people deserve a safe place to heal.
