AI may be involved in your insurance authorization before a human ever reviews it.
That doesn’t necessarily mean AI is making the final denial. Insurance companies can use algorithms, automated rules, and AI-assisted systems to screen prior authorizations, identify missing information, compare documentation against coverage criteria, and route cases for further review.
For someone seeking lymphatic surgery, that distinction matters.
You may actually meet the medical-necessity criteria, but does your authorization packet clearly PROVE it?
Diagnosis ✔️
Conservative treatment ✔️
Duration of treatment ✔️
Objective measurements ✔️
Functional impairment ✔️
Imaging/testing ✔️
Failure of conservative treatment ✔️
Procedure-specific criteria ✔️
Having something somewhere in your medical record isn’t always the same as clearly demonstrating that you meet the payer’s criteria.
That’s why I believe we need to spend just as much time improving the authorization packet BEFORE submission as we do fighting the denial afterward.
The goal isn’t more paperwork.
It’s the right evidence, organized around the right criteria.

When an insurance company labels a treatment "experimental/investigational," that determination deserves to be examined carefully.
This is why documentation matters.

We already know the importance of movement. But knowing what we should do and actually making movement part of our everyday routine can be two different things. Tonight, we are going to have a real conversation about accountability, consistency, and movement in the Thrive Community.

Join us for a practical conversation about K-Tape and elastic therapeutic taping for
We’ll discuss what lymphatic taping is, how it may support a larger lymphedema-management plan, where and why therapists may use different taping patterns, and why tighter does not mean better.
We’ll also cover important skin-safety precautions, when taping may not be appropriate, and signs that mean the tape should be removed.
This session is designed to help you ask better questions and understand where therapeutic taping may fit into your care. Taping is an additional tool, not a replacement for compression, Complete Decongestive Therapy, or individualized medical guidance.
Bring your questions and share your experience if you have used therapeutic tape before!

I just got off an insurance appeal panel call.
And we won.
But honestly, the bigger lesson is how we won.
This was for a patient whose MITESE procedure had been denied because the insurance company said the record did not show two things:
1. That she had a problem with normal functioning
2. That the procedure was expected to improve functioning
But here’s the thing.
That evidence had already been submitted.
Not once.
In both appeal packets.
During the call, I walked the panel through exactly where criteria two and three were met.
We showed where the record documented the patient’s functional limitations and where the physician’s documentation supported why the procedure was expected to improve function.
At one point, one of the physicians essentially asked:
“How was this missed? Was this not included in the appeal packet?”
And the moderator confirmed that it was included in both packets.
That moment says a lot.
Because sometimes a denial letter makes it sound like the evidence does not exist. But the real issue may be that the evidence was buried, overlooked, misunderstood, or not connected clearly to the insurer’s own criteria.
And this is exactly why patients cannot afford to be passive in the appeal process.
You cannot assume that just because your doctor sent records, the insurance company connected the dots.
You cannot assume that just because something is in the medical record, the reviewer saw it, understood it, or applied it correctly.
And you cannot assume that a denial automatically means your case is weak.
Sometimes the evidence is there.
But no one has forced the plan to look at the right evidence under the right criteria.
One thing I appreciated on today’s call was that the panel acknowledged how organized and professional the appeal packets were. That mattered because when the packet is organized correctly, you are not just sending documents. You are building a record.
That is what advocacy is.
It is identifying the exact denial reason, matching the evidence to the policy criteria, and making the reviewer address what is already in the file.
So if your insurance denies a procedure, do not stop at:
“Did my doctor send records?”
Ask:
What criteria did they say I failed?
Where is the evidence that meets those criteria?
Did the reviewer actually address that evidence?
Because an appeal is not just about sending more paperwork.
It is about making the reviewer deal with the truth that is already in the record.
And today, that made the difference.

I recently went in for my first colonoscopy EVER, and it didn’t exactly go as planned.
They found some abnormal results, which led to a biopsy.
The biopsy came back with some unusual findings that looked like colorectal cancer.
The good news is that the doctor was able to successfully remove all of the cancer from my re**um.
This definitely explains the intense pain I was dealing with right after the procedure!
On top of that, I am currently dealing with a few other spots. I have cancer on the bottom of my foot (the exact same foot where I previously had cancer on my heel), which we are currently treating with a medicated cream.
I am also currently undergoing treatment for the cancer on my face.
It is a lot to take in and manage all at once. But if there is one thing I know with absolute certainty, it is that the Lord has me.
I am resting in His peace, knowing full well that He hasn’t brought me this far for nothing.
My faith is bigger than my fears, and I know He is walking with me through every single step of this journey.
So, how am I handling all of this heavy news? Joy is a choice, and with God on my side, I am choosing to celebrate today.
Thank you all for your continued love and prayers.

Tonight’s Thrive Live is one we probably don’t talk about enough: dating, marriage, intimacy, confidence and lymphedema.
I’m sharing the patient perspective, including a pretty funny story about breaking up with someone as a teenager because I was afraid he’d see my leg…only to run into him YEARS later and find out he had absolutely no idea I even had lymphedema. 😂
Brian Espinola - Lymphatic Wellness Hub is joining me from the practitioner side because I also want to talk about how providers can create a safe space for patients to discuss the things they may never bring up on their own.
Sometimes the most important question isn’t “How is your swelling?”
It’s “How is this affecting your life?”
