Congratulations to Timothy J. Eberlein, MD, FACS, founding director of Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and WashU Medicine, on being installed as the 107th president of the American College of Surgeons, the world's largest organization of surgeons.

Dr. Eberlein has led Siteman since its founding in 1999, served as chair of the Department of Surgery at WashU Medicine for almost 25 years and has been active in the ACS for more than 30 years.

His theme for his presidential year says it all: "The House of Surgery: Stronger Together."

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month might be wrapping up, but the conversation is ongoing. Children with cancer are not mini adults. Their care, symptoms and treatment require a completely different approach.

A new mobile cancer screening unit is hitting the road. The 40-foot Siteman Lung Screening Van is the only one of its kind in the region, outfitted with a state-of-the-art low-dose CT scanner that offers quick, painless imaging to spot early-stage signs of the disease.

The van will travel from central Missouri to St. Louis and down to the Bootheel.

This is the third unit in Siteman Cancer Center's growing mobile fleet, joining the Mammography Van (screening for breast cancer since 1986) and the Health on the Move Community Van. Together, they form the largest such fleet in the region.

Today, we unveiled the Lung Screening Van and celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Mammography Van with community members, WashU Medicine, BJC HealthCare, WashU Medicine Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital and others.

It's almost time. The 17th annual Pedal the Cause rides at the Family Arena in St. Charles on Sept. 19 and 20. Riders, spinners, volunteers, families and friends all coming together for one reason: to fund cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children's Hospital.

100% of participant-raised donations go directly to Siteman. Since 2010, this community has raised more than $56 million for cancer research.
