Tornado Watch Issued Until 10:00 PM

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch for portions of eastern Missouri and central Illinois through 10:00 PM CDT this evening.

Conditions across the region have become increasingly favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, destructive winds, and very large hail. Residents across the watch area should remain weather aware and be prepared to take action if warnings are issued.

First Warn Weather Discussion

Thunderstorms are expected to rapidly develop this afternoon across eastern Missouri and western Illinois before spreading eastward through the evening hours. The atmosphere is extremely unstable and combined with strong wind shear will support rotating supercell thunderstorms.

These storms will be capable of producing all severe weather hazards, including tornadoes, destructive straight-line winds, and very large hail. The greatest concern will be from mid-afternoon through the evening hours as storms move through the St. Louis metro and surrounding communities.

Timing

3 PM - 6 PM

Storms develop and intensify across central and eastern Missouri and western Illinois.

6 PM - 9 PM

Peak severe weather threat for the St. Louis metro and much of eastern Missouri and western Illinois.
Tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail all possible.

9 PM - 10 PM

Storms continue east and southeast with damaging winds remaining a concern.
What You Should Do

A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. It does not mean a tornado is occurring, but it does mean you should be prepared to act quickly if warnings are issued.
