🌊 5 things we wish everyone knew about the Bay-Delta

This Delta Week, we’re highlighting a few important facts about the Bay-Delta region.

1️⃣ The Delta is formed by the confluence of the state’s two largest rivers: the Sacramento, flowing south from its headwaters near Mount Shasta, and the San Joaquin, flowing north from its origins high in the southern Sierra Nevada.

2️⃣ The Delta consists of primary and secondary zones. If you live in parts of Solano, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Yolo, or Contra Costa counties, you may live within the Bay-Delta! (Delta Stewardship Council)

3️⃣ The Delta is home to more than 750 species of plants and animals, and 55 fish species, many of them threatened or endangered.

4️⃣ The Bay-Delta watershed is home to the ancestral lands and territories of numerous California Native tribes, such as the Sierra Miwok, Lassik, Konkow, Lake Miwok, Atsugewi, Wintu, Pomo, Achumawi, Yana, Patwin, Yokuts, Yuki, Nisenan, Wappo, Maidu, Modoc, Nomlaki, Washoe, Northern Paiute, and Shasta Tribes. 5️⃣ The bay-delta provides a portion of the water used by two-thirds of all Californians, about 27 million people.

This California Native American Day, we honor the first stewards of the Delta and California's waterways.

Today, the Delta Tribal Environmental Coalition (DTEC), made up of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, Winnemem Wintu Tribe, Little Manila Rising, and Restore the Delta, submitted comments on the updated San Francisco Bay-Delta Water Quality Control Plan.

The coalition is raising serious concerns about the updated plan and its continued reliance on Voluntary Agreements, which would allow water districts to make limited flow commitments in exchange for exemptions from stronger, enforceable requirements.

DTEC is calling for meaningful protections for Tribal communities, environmental justice communities, the Delta ecosystem, and the millions of people who depend on it. The State Water Board will soon vote on whether to adopt the final Bay-Delta Plan and Voluntary Agreements on October 28-29, 2026, with the hearing continuing October 30 if necessary.

: Tribes and environmental groups call on AG Bonta to stand up against federal overreach in California water management

Following recent news that the Bureau of Reclamation stated the State Water Resources Control Board has no authority to impose regulations on the Central Valley Project or to question decisions regarding the impacts of Shasta Dam and Reservoir operations, Tribes and environmental groups are calling on Attorney General Rob Bonta to speak out.

In a recent letter, the coalition says that these actions could have significant consequences for fish, wildlife, and communities throughout the Bay-Delta watershed.

The letter urges Attorney General Bonta to stand up against the federal overreach and to protect California’s authority in managing its water and natural resources.
