DISCOVER THE AIZOME SHIBORI SIGNATURE SERIES

The Aizome Shibori Signature Series is a structured study of cloth, resist and indigo—moving from foundational control toward the development of your own visual language.

Rooted in Japanese textile traditions, these workshops emphasize authentic process, careful observation and learning through repetition and refinement. Rather than concentrating on one quick finished project, students explore how folding, stitching, binding, tension and indigo work together to create pattern.

Begin with a one-day introduction, choose an individual two-day intensive or experience the complete progression through the Shibori Mastery Retreat. Workshops may be taken individually and do not have to be completed in order.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

• Shibori Fundamentals — November 16, 2026
• Itajime Shibori: Blocks, Bindings and Indigo — December 10, 2026
• Shibori Foundations: Cloth, Indigo and Control — December 15–16, 2026
• Shibori Mastery Retreat — January 18–28, 2027
• Shibori Fundamentals — February 5, 2027
• Katazome: Pattern, Paste and Indigo — March 22–26, 2027
• Stitch Resist Intensive — April 19–20, 2027

FEATURED: SHIBORI MASTERY RETREAT
ONLY TWO SPACES REMAIN

The 10-day Shibori Mastery Retreat offers the rare opportunity to experience the full arc of the Signature Series through sustained, immersive study.

A centerpiece of the retreat is working with a traditional Japanese **sukumo indigo vat**. Made from composted Japanese indigo leaves, this living fermentation vat must be carefully prepared, tended and understood.

Students will have time to observe the vat, work with it repeatedly and build richer layers of indigo as their cloth develops. The extended format allows participants to return to their work, refine resist techniques, build complexity and begin developing a personal visual language through shibori.

NEW 1 DAY CLASS

Itajime Shibori: Blocks, Bindings & Indigo
A One-Day Workshop with Suzanne Connors
Explore the striking geometric patterns of itajime shibori, a traditional Japanese technique that uses folded cloth, wooden blocks, and pressure to resist dye. Working with indigo, you’ll discover how simple changes in folding, block placement, and binding create a wide range of designs.
We’ll begin with accordion folds, then explore square and triangular configurations. You’ll use wooden blocks, clamps, and bindings to control the resist, experimenting with exposed edges, spacing, and repeated dipping to develop patterns and shades of blue.
Throughout the day, Suzanne will guide you in achieving crisp patterns while leaving room for experimentation and unexpected results. You’ll create a collection of samples to inspire future work in quilting, wearable art, or home décor.
You’ll learn to:
- Fold cloth accurately for square and triangular patterns.
- Position blocks and secure them with clamps or bindings.
- Adjust pressure and dye exposure to vary your designs.
- Dip, oxidize, and repeat to build indigo color.
- Unfold, rinse, and evaluate your finished patterns.
Level: All levels welcome; no previous shibori experience required.
Length: One day.
Materials: Sample cloth, wooden blocks, clamps, bindings, and a prepared indigo vat will be available for classroom use. Optional additional fabric or scarves may be offered for purchase.
Bring: An apron, long waterproof gloves, and clothes and shoes that can get stained.
Come ready to fold, bind, dip—and discover the possibilities hidden within a piece of cloth.
Aizome Signature Shibori Workshops have no minimum enrollment!
