From the 13th to the 16th century, herring from the Sound—the strait in the Baltic Sea between Denmark and Sweden—was one of northern Europe's most important trade goods. Salted herring from the so-called Skanör-Falsterbo fed large parts of Europe. Around 1570, however, this fishery collapsed within a short period of time—with far-reaching consequences for trade, politics, and society. It took almost 400 years, until the 1950s, before comparable catch volumes were reached again.
An international team of fisheries economists, , and historians led by Kiel University (CAU) and the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) has now investigated why this fishery, stable for centuries, collapsed so suddenly. The results show that the collapse of the fishery cannot be explained by a simple stock collapse alone.

New genetic has provided compelling evidence that the Arabian Sea humpback whale represents a distinct evolutionary lineage, supporting its potential recognition as a fourth subspecies of humpback whale. Published in Frontiers in Marine Science, the study marks a significant milestone in more than 25 years of in Oman.
Led by the Wildlife Conservation Society in close collaboration with the Environment Society of Oman (ESO), the Environment Authority of Oman, and other key local and international partners, the study compared samples from Arabian Sea humpback whales with populations from across the world’s oceans. Researchers analyzed mitochondrial DNA from 2,285 humpback whales sampled across the species’ relevant and global range.

University of Miami scientists are tracking loggerhead sea turtles in Biscayne Bay to better understand where their movements overlap with vessel traffic, information that could help reduce the risk of boat strikes in one of Florida's busiest .
The project is led by Chris Long and Mitch Rider of the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science’s Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS). It is supported by a grant from the Florida Sea Turtle License Plate Grants Program, which funds , conservation, and education initiatives benefiting Florida .
Sea turtles in Miami-Dade County face an elevated risk of injury or death from vessel strikes, particularly in Biscayne Bay, where high numbers of turtles and boaters share the water. and outreach efforts are limited by a lack of detailed information about where and when turtles are most vulnerable.

An international study carried out in the Galápagos Islands and co-led by the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes–Spanish National Research Council (CEAB-CSIC) has developed a new indicator, resistance, which helps explain why some nearby differ while others farther apart resemble each other.
The results show that the direction and intensity of local currents are among the key factors determining , with an explanatory power comparable to traditionally studied variables. The work highlights the need to incorporate this perspective into biodiversity .
The study, recently published in the journal Diversity and Distributions, combines two complementary ways of observing the ocean. First, the team analyzed environmental DNA present in (genetic material left behind by through traces) to identify the fish present at different locations across the archipelago.

Both of Hornsea 3's Offshore Converter Stations have now been successfully installed. Together, they will help transform and transport clean power from Ørsted's Hornsea 3, the world's single largest farm.
The offshore converter stations are both made up of the jacket, piled into the , and the topside, which sits above. Although they might look identical, the jacket structures are different designs due to their different locations. The jacket for the second Offshore Converter Station will stand in 37 meters of water, five meters deeper than the first, making the structure 6 meters taller at 60 meters—slightly taller than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Although it sits deeper, the second Offshore Converter Station remains the same height in total—at 70 m above or 1.2 times the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Both need to be the same height to stand clear of the .

Florida's accounts for close to $100 billion in annual output and more than 900,000 jobs. Shipbuilding, the focus of the President's 2026 Maritime Action Plan, touches about 5 percent of it.
Colin Polsky, of Florida Atlantic University's Broward campuses and Florida's Office of the Ocean Economy, argues universities need to reach further: tourism, transportation, fisheries, and flood control are all short on talent too. His case draws on two federal policies at once, the Maritime Action Plan and a new cross-agency talent strategy aimed at graduate employability.
