It’s and our team is emphasizing the importance of lithium-ion battery safety. In this video, Community Risk Reduction Specialist Josh Jenkins shares how the devices we use every day can become a fire hazard when batteries are damaged, overheated, overcharged or improperly handled.
🔋Charge smart:
• Only use the original, manufacturer-approved battery and charger that are designed for the device.
• Once a battery is fully charged, unplug it.
• Charge your device on a flat, dry surface. Do not charge anything on a soft surface like under a pillow or on a couch.
🔥Store smart:
• Keep devices and batteries away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
• Never crush, puncture or disassemble batteries.
• Store batteries in a cool, dry place and keep them away from water and metal objects.
♻️ Proper Disposal:
• Never put lithium-ion batteries in your household trash or recycling bin.
• Martin County residents can drop off residential lithium batteries for FREE at the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Center. More information about their hours and operations can be found on our website.
Plug in. Power up. Stay safe, Martin County.

Before Charlotte knew what a firefighter was, our firefighters knew her.
On April, 6, 2020, Martin County Fire Rescue crews helped deliver Charlotte in the back of a rescue truck.
After looking through pictures from the morning she was born, Charlotte wanted to learn more about the heroes who helped her mom that day.
Five years later, Charlotte and her mom Kristina reunited with the team at Station 21.
From the tiny newborn they delivered five years ago in the first photo, to the little girl sitting beside them in the second, full-circle moments like this mean so much to our crews.
Charlotte’s story reminds us that some calls are more than just calls. They become memories, connections and stories that stay with us long after the lights turn off. ❤️🚑👶

Fire Prevention Week is the longest-running public health and safety observance in America. 🔥
It’s honored each year in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
During this week and year-round, our Fire Prevention team provides lifesaving public education to children, adults, businesses, HOAs, schools and more in efforts of drastically decreasing casualties caused by fires.
Please take a moment to watch Fire Marshal Doug Killane, Deputy Fire Marshal Kris Hansen and Community Risk Reduction Specialist Josh Jenkins accept a proclamation from the Martin County Board of County Commissioners meeting officially declaring October 4 to 10 as Fire Prevention Week.

Station 18 opened its bay doors and welcomed dozens of people to another open house Saturday afternoon. 🔥🚒
Our firefighters led kids, parents and community members through guided tours of our apparatus and firehouse. Crews brought out bunker gear and extrication tools for a hands-on learning experience.
The day was full of many special visitors including the man who hand-crafted our station’s dining room table. He told us he spent more than 30 combined hours building it and seeing the finished piece in the station made the time and effort he put into it even more meaningful.
Thank you to IAFF Local 2959 for providing delicious pulled pork sandwiches, and thanks to all of YOU for visiting!

Our firefighters, Fire Prevention and Emergency Management teams recently visited the Boys & Girls Club Indiantown, turning fire safety and emergency preparedness into a hands-on learning experience.
Everyone got an up-close look at our firefighters’ bunker gear, learned what to do in an emergency and practiced using a fire extinguisher with our simulator. Emergency Management’s therapy dog, Titan, also made a special appearance.
We’re proud of these kids for asking questions, staying curious and learning how to keep themselves and others safe. 🚒🔥
